Hostelz.com's Review
Hostelboat Anna Maria II is a unique place for travelers of all ages -- not just young backpackers. For those who want to experience a different style of living, sleeping on a boat in the port city of Amsterdam is perfect.

The Location

The hostel is located at Oosterdok, roughly a ten-minute walk from the Amsterdam Centraal Train Station. From the boat you can see the train station, the beautiful Bibliotheek, and the Nemo Museum as you sit on the deck. If you leave the train station with the water on your left, you can follow the shore until you reach docks with lots of large boats, many of them also hostels or hotels. The area is quiet as it's a distance from the road and visitors can walk the docks and check out the other boats nearby.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Rooms are small, as expected on a boat that isn't built for luxury travel. Each room contains two bunk beds, a sink, some shelving space, hooks, and a small mirror. Therefore, rooms are private and no lockers to store luggage are needed. The bathrooms and showers are separate, clean, and shared amongst guests. Showers are very basic and only have a few hooks for your things. They also have a tendency to flood the entire shower room, so having actual shelves for clothes would be nice.

Common Spaces

The main common area -- the breakfast room -- is also the biggest. Free breakfast is served here each morning and the room becomes a place to hang out once the meal is done. There are a number of tables and chairs, games, and tourism information books that guests can use to further their stay in Amsterdam. The other common area is the deck, which is outside on the top of the boat. There are a few benches and it's minimally furnished, but the views are fantastic. Because rooms are so small, most guests end up spending their time in one of these two common spaces.

Summary

Hostelboat Anna Maria II is a great place to stay for a short time. The uniqueness of the location and its appropriateness in Amsterdam really gives you a feel for the city and culture of the people. The owners themselves run the hostel and are there serving breakfast every morning. For those who like to have more space to spread out and prefer comfier accommodations, the boat may not be for you. But, if you're visiting for a short time, we recommend you give it a try.
