3  Just about acceptable Central and reasonably priced, rooms acceptably clean, but shower (only one) and toilets not really clean at all, smelled pretty bad. Staff speak good English, but treat guests like a minor inconvenience rather than paying customers. They claim visa registration takes days -- mine never arrived. Free basic breakfast. Quite a few Russians stay there so could be good for meeting natives. Overall, average by Russian standards, poor by general European ones.  , UK ()
4  This hostel isnt up to Western European standards, its a bit shabby, but has hot showers, spacious rooms and breakfast included. The staff are friendly, helpful, and speak English fluently. They were prompt and efficient when organising my invitation letter (paperwork I needed to obtain my Russian visa). The location could be more central, but St Petersburg is a fantastic city to walk, and there is a metro stop a couple of blocks away. If you are staying in summer, make sure you use the mosquito repellents offered at reception (for a small refundable deposit).  ()
2  It was "ok." The showers were not reliable for temperature, as the water heaters weren't always working. Also the flimsy shower curtains were not particularly adequate! You had to share one room key between everyone in your dorm and there were no proper lockers, although there were some safe facilities in the reception. The staff were nice though, and sold water. The rooms were big and the place was reasonably clean. Lots of stairs, although a dodgy lift helped. The location is pretty good, although you can get more central.  ()
4  It's cheap, cheerful and in the middle of town in an interesting spot. It has friendly staff, an adequate breakfast, and the hostel is clean if a tad shabby. If you go in the lift, then you're a braver woman than I am!  ()
4  This hostel is very central, just off Nevsky Prospekt. We stayed in a room for six people and paid 450 rubles a night. Breakfast was included and it was quite good; you could stock up for the day on it. The staff were friendly and accommodating and spoke English. The rooms themselves were fine. a cleaner came in every morning to sweep the floor. The only problem was getting in at the main door because the hostel was on the 3rd floor. Sometimes the old granny at the front desk gave us some hassle, but generally it was fine. Plus you get free tickets for the puppet theatre next door.  ()
