Graskop Valley View Hostel is very friendly and clean. The owners, a couple, are charming and helpful. There isn't much of a social atmosphere, however, it is more for relaxing since it is somewhat isolated. It is a well appointed hostel serving the needs of backpackers with internet access, fax service, luggage storage, security lockers, bike rental, and washers and dryers. There is also a small, friendly bar and restaurant onsite with very good food from local sources. Included in the price is bed linen but towels are an additional cost.
Location
The hostel, easy to find since Graskop is a village, is in a lovely area and is very safe, but is not serviced by public transportation. There is ample, free parking for guests with cars (as most people staying here do). The hostel is a five-minute walk from the center of the small town. Graskop is a great location -- excellent for mountain biking and hiking -- and the jumping off point for the Blythe River Canyon and its activities. There are delicious pancake restaurants in the town. Tours to the animal parks can be arranged.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are very clean and comfortable and nicely decorated. The climate in Graskop is mild and fans keep things comfortable (there is no air conditioning). There is an eight-bed mixed dorm with en-suite and twin rooms with en-suite or with shared bathrooms.
Common Spaces
There is a clean kitchen for guest use that is well supplied and a nice common room with a library and a television. The general atmosphere is relaxed rather than a party place for meeting people. There is also a porch and a BBQ area for cooking and relaxing (in addition to guest use of the BBQ, the owners host a regular BBQ for hostel guests). It is a non-smoking hostel and children are welcome.
Summary
This hostel is terrific for the value, beautiful location, clean rooms, friendly owners, and facilities. The tour desk is very good at recommending activities and arranging tours and car hire for travelers. There is also secure bike storage.
