Schloss Mansfeld (Mansfeld castle) dates from 1509 and is now a Christian retreat. It is located on a hill overlooking Mansfeld-Lutherstadt in the German federal state of Sachsen-Anhalt.
It is not the easiest place to get to but once there, it makes a wonderful place for a break. The nearest train station is Mansfeld but it is probably easier to get bus 372 from either Sandersleben or Eisleben stations to Mansfeld Schloss bus stop and walk up the path to the castle – timetables can be found at www.insa.de. A taxi from Sandersleben costs about €25.
The facilities have been modernised and the rooms are kept clean and tidy. Breakfast is continental style – made up of cheese and cold meats, which is nice enough but gets a little tedious after a while.
Although not particularly cheap, the castle provides an ideal place to explore Mansfeld, which along with Eisleben and Wittenberg make up the three main "Martin Luther towns." Mansfeld was where Martin Luther spent his childhood and went to school. There are not many amenities in Mansfeld apart from a supermarket and a bar/restaurant – credit cards are almost unheard of here.
Taking a walk around the castle is a nice way to explore the area – with magnificent views of the surrounding area. On summer weekends, several German tour buses take tourists around the site.
