The Hostelz.com Review
Up a narrow steep pathway five minutes above the main street of Kaikoura lies Top Spot. It has the same owners as The Lazy Shag, a few meters north along the coast, but unlike its modern counterpart, this hostel has fifty more years under its roof, which gives it a more relaxed old-fashioned feel.

Rose-laced arches cover the trail to the front of one of the two white houses, which boasts as its motto "not just a place to stay ... an experience." Handmade shell wind chimes in a cosy living area/kitchen and the vine-covered back porch combine to give Top Spot a quaint, earthy feel.

There's a record player in the living room providing Bob Marley and UB40 grooves and a fireplace solidifying the hostel's touch of laid-back retro vibe. Upstairs in the loft is a single computer cubbyhole with free internet (that is, of course, low-speed) and a movie-watching area just next to it with a handful of videos. But, the main attraction is the ocean and mountain views. There's a narrow balcony providing an even better glimpse.

The kitchen is medium-sized and standard. Pots and silverware are slightly cluttered in drawers, as is expected in a hostel. The large shower/toilets are unisex, which may not be for some who prefer more privacy. However, they are clean and provide indoor changing rooms. One annoyance is the draft that blasts through the many small windows here and through the halls and some of the bedrooms. It can get very chilly away from the living areas.

The bedrooms and bathrooms are standard and clean and the hostel itself is nothing phenomenal. Still, it provides the basics with a few extra charms. Also, regular slightly discounted seal-swimming excursions are provided and a detailed description of the local walks is on the wall. If you relish the small things in life, it may be worth ascending the steep incline to get to the Top Spot.

Great location, nice kitchen and lounge area, rooms were basic but ok. none of this matters however when the manager is so unfriendly that he makes you feel uncomfortable to be there. Unless you're a single girl (a warning if you are -- you will be chatted up mercilessly by this sleaze -- it was embarrassing to watch) or a single bloke (he will try and befriend you in order to get closer to the single girls) you might as well be completely invisible. Travelling as part of a couple, you are made to feel unwelcome, and if you have to temerity to complain about a problem in your room (the heating didn't work) you will be told you're imagining things and then treated as a troublemaker for daring to complain about it for the rest of your stay. The Kiwi Experience bus recommends this hostel and loads of the people we met afterwards who'd also stayed there said the same thing -- could have been a great place, shame about the utter sleaze in charge.

Really friendly hostel. Dave, the owner, went out of his way to help -- drove me to the launderette when the hostel machines were taken up with washing sheets. Nice big kitchen and lovely garden. Was very busy with Kiwi Experience though but not too noisy.

I had a fantastic time at this perfectly located, friendly hostel. The view from the common room is awesome and the kitchen with its real fire is something else. Plus the staff are many cheeky and friendly beings. I had a mind-blowing stay here. It's more than a place to stay, it's an experience!!

I stayed in the shack (double en suite) which was well worth the extra cash. It had a lovely warm bed and nice hot shower, like having your own little cottage!!! The staff were very friendly and the hostel is in a good location near bars and shops.

If you are looking for a nice, quiet hostel with an almost family-like atmosphere, Top Spot is the place to be. Great view from the balcony, even better barbeque. Dave, Dennis and Daniel will take good care of you. They even start the fireplace when you are coming back from the seal swim freezing your butt off. Hope to be back soon!

This was the best hostel I stayed at in New Zealand. Wonderful mountain view, and the scenery at night of the stars is wonderful from the beautiful lawn area they have outside the hostel. Very clean, and awesome kitchen.

I visited Top Spot in 1997 and had an incredible stay. Whale watching, swimming with dolphins — it was mind-blowing. The hostel was fantastic. We were made to feel very welcome by everyone, but hey, that's the spirit of everyone on his or her own little adventures! I will be visiting New Zealand and Oz in 2006. Kaikoura, here I come!
