The Hostelz.com Review
Magnum's Backpackers is right along Shute Harbor Road, where a bright yellow banner announcing the place greets you as locals sip happy-hour-priced beers from afternoon until evening and all-day drink specials on Sundays. Magnum's features great access to the lagoon (across the street) and a crackin' night life.
Location
Magnum's is located right smack in the middle of the small town of Airlie Beach, which can be reached via plane ride from all major cities (Brisbane/Sydney) and then bus shuttle from nearby Prosperine Airport or a fairly expensive ferry ride from the small airport on Hamilton Island (it's worth flying into because it is a cheaper, more scenic flight). Airlie beach is a one road town, so you won't have any trouble finding Magnum's, as the front faces the road and the foot/car traffic. Street parking is also easy right out front.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The double, private-cabin rooms feature easy access to shared, clean, open air, sinks; showers; and bathrooms, which are only a few steps down the hall. The hostel is very affordable and brags the cheapest prices in town. Each cabin is clean, with its own mini fridge and air conditioning unit, hot water tea pot, and a few dishes for tenants use. Extremely affordable luggage storage and laundry facilities are a couple of other great perks.
Common Spaces
The main common spaces of the hostel are the pool tables, TV sitting areas, and smoking/nonsmoking outdoor bar tables that link Magnum's outdoor bar to several other affordable eateries.
Summary
All in all, we quite enjoyed our stay at Magnum's even though at times we could hear the other more exuberant travelers through the thin walls. It was by far the best bang for our buck in Australia and we are coming back!

GREAT Place The property was fine and there were no bugs. Had a great holiday. Would stay again. — Anonymous , Australia (2011-12-23)
Worst hostel ive stayed in so far Ive stayed in quite a few hostels so far and booking this one without reading reviews i stayed there without any prior expectations. Having read the reviews here i agree with most, i did encounter bed bugs as did the friend i was traveling with. The showers/toilets have a saloon style door which is far from ideal. I didnt have any problems with staff being rude but one did seem rude to a woman in front of me when i was booking in. The hostel does have free internet which is perhaps its only bonus. The breakfast room stressed me out and was the main reason (and the bedbugs!) i moved after the first night. I dont usually review hostels but thought id let people know that this hostel is still in a pretty poor condition even now. — Richard D , British (2011-10-21)
Really bad experience -- staff steals your money They promised two free nights in the hostel in combination with an (expensive) cruise. But the charged my credit card for the nights anyway. Staff was very rude and refused to refund. Police couldn't do anything and the credit card company was unable to block because there was no receipt. Be careful, they'll try to rip you off. — Erik , Dutch (2011-07-13)
DO NOT STAY -- BEDBUGS EVERYWHERE Incredibly rude staff. After getting attacked by bedbugs I tried to cancel following nights but they wouldn't refund me. I tried to get a meeting with the manager and was just lied to about when she would be there so I couldn't complain. I asked for them to wash my stuff or give money but they refused so didn't care that I was bringing bedbugs to another room. — Anonymous , England (2011-05-15)
Dorms are awful, doubles are better We stayed at Magnums for 3 nights in a double room. The room itself was okay and clean, and the showers aren't bad. Don't be surprised by insects, this is part of the tropical setting. However, the staff is extremely rude. Never a smile and they openly make fun of your questions. You must leave $50 or your credit card/ passport at the reception as a key deposit, which is way over the top. I left a used student card. I'm not gonna leave my passport with Magnum staff! There was a problem in one of the bathroom one night and water was pouring out, flooding the rooms. At 11 pm, the reception was closed and the security guys/ bouncers told us to "get lost" when we asked who we could contact for help. The breakfast kitchen is a joke, always dirty and can barely fit 4 people. We had a look at the dorms and they look awful, smelly and dirty. The double are much better! This is a party place. — Zhu , Canada (2010-12-20)
HORROR TRIP the staff is really rude, i got bedbugs there and instead of giving me refund they asked me to leave the hostel! my old roommates told me that they rented my bed immediately to new guests! almost every room has got bedbugs and the only thing the staff is doing, is using some mosquito spray for cleaning. i changed my room two times because of bedbugs and i have them everywhere, it looks horrible and it's itching all the time. after telling the management that i've been bitten again she told me to check out tomorrow morning and search for a new place. I've never been treated like this in any hostel!!! — Kate , German (2010-11-08)
Accommodation from hell, small room, noisy neighbour, loud music The private double in Magnums Airlie Beach was an accommodation in hell for us. If you would like a nice comfort room with peace and quiet, then I wouldn't recommend it. This isn't a backpacker or hostel place in my understanding. The room is very small. You got a double bed and a bedside cupboard all fitted in about 3X3 (meters) space. There is a small bench outside which merely fits two people under the window. You can enjoy, if you don't mind mosquito, of course. There is a small fridge as part of the bedside cupboard, however, you are not allowed drinking on site apart from the bar which pumping out loud music from morning till dawn. If you want to cook yourself a meal, then you can try the only breakfast room that serves the whole site. I didn't count how many rooms there are. However, our room number was 121, and there are about 12 double rooms in that building alone. We didn't know that this is a big holiday village complex. A bar and a night club are on site, and probably played the loudest music in Airlie Beach.
We booked the room through a booking company and paid 10% deposit. When we arrived on site, we were told that we would lose our 10% and the room reservation if we didn't pay the full amount for our 6 nights' stay. Fearing of nowhere to stay, we paid. After we saw our room wanting a refund, the receptionist was very rude to us and refused to issue us a refund. I wish that I have read some review before I have made the booking. — Rui (2010-01-30)
Not impressed, at all. (First week of November 2009) I booked in advance for a private dorm for one I called a week before my flight to make sure that my reservation was properly reserved, as you do. For some reason it wasn't, due to my travel agent, so I called my travel agent then Magnum's shortly after just to sort it all out, when I rang them back (magnum's) I was speaking to one of the receptionists who was extremely rude and sounded inexperienced; totally cold, all I was trying to verify that the room that was booked for my desired date was now properly booked.
By the time I actually arrived to Magnum's not one, or two or three but all four staff members were absolutely rude! (Too much attitude and not enough smiling it seemed like none of them could be asked to put at least a bit of effort in their job they were even more rude and unfriendly than they were over the phone). I was so shocked to see that these ladies were working in hospitality with such rotten attitudes; I myself have worked in hospitality for over five years and I would never want to work for a company that allows employees approach guests with such "no can do" behavioral rotten, unfriendly attitude towards new and previous guests. However, the two ladies that work under the clock tower were extremely lovely. They greeted me in a proper and friendly manor, they were patient with every single person that came up to them and they even smiled and were extremely helpful I even thanked them for their humble hospitality and said that they were both the only and most friendly of them all. One more thing I like to add I was in a rush to catch my last shuttle to the air port and a girl named Ashleigh and Kelly said to me I had to wait for a certain time to retrieve my bag from the lock up I literally had two minutes to the specific time that they had and all they did within those two minutes was stand there and watched one of their co-workers do some light paper work, after that, that's when they opened the lock up for myself and a few others, what was the point of that? We as guest are told in the beginning that the set times for opening the lock ups is for when the staff at Magnum's are too busy but for some reason at that point and time two perfectly healthy girls were not so busy. Furthermore, for somebody who has heart and asthma problems I had to pay $5 to take a cold shower to help me cool down preventing from passing out in the heat, the lady behind the counter just rolled her eyes and said "those are the rules nothing I can do about it if you don't want to pay then cant have a shower, sorry." Why are they working in the Hospitality industry? I've told all my friends about my horrible experience at Magnum's and yet funny enough they heard similar stories as well. I'm disgusted, totally not impressed, and I never want to go back to Magnum's again. — Samantha , Canadian (2009-12-01)

Good compared to other places in Airlie Beach I stayed here just one night, but encountered absolutely no problems. The place is much nicer than the others I saw in Airlie Beach. It is also cheaper. The rooms, which are further away from the bar, are not noisy. I did not hear any noise. — Lior , Israel (2009-04-15)
Rude staff, Very noisy We booked ten days at this hostel and were really glad to be able to get out four days early to transfer to a different hostel. We found one member of the staff very rude and very unhelpful. I believe this was the manager. If you hire a car, they expect you to pay caravan fee's to park it in their reasonable sized car park. Bearing in mind, there were plenty of spaces at this particular time and only wanted to park it for one hour! We stayed in a double room which was very small especially once the suitcases were in there. When we checked in we asked to be in a quiet area. We couldn't actually sleep as there was a big group of people having a party more or less outside our front door. This went on for three nights -- not even a break from it! A couple of people complained but the staff didn't seem to care. The showers and toilets were fairly clean, considering this is hostel living. The kitchen is only a breakfast room so don't be expecting to be able to cook much. Alcohol is very expensive at the Magnums Bar. Although, it really was a good night out. They have karaoke on Wed and foam parties on Thursday's. I would recommend this hostel to single people who are willing to party literally all the time! Being a couple we just wanted a bit of peace at times! — Couple from UK , UK (2008-12-26)
Bad this hostel was one of the worst we had stayed at! it may be cheap for a night but you had to pay $7 for linen and would only get $5 back when you returned them. had to pay to store our luggage for whitsundays and we could only get into at certain times, dorms were gross. found cockroaches on my bed. spiders all around the bathroom. We arrived just as the cleaning crew finished but it didnt look like they did anything. my friends bed had stains all over it. the kitchen only had one knife and no other cutlery. The bar and food was good that's probably the only good thing about this hostel — nicole & charlotte , canada & england (2008-11-11)

Great hostel, great stay I'm really surprised by everyone's reviews, i had a brilliant stay there and found the rooms and bathrooms very very clean. Showers were some of the best i've seen. The grounds are amazing, the rooms are like little lodges spread through a rainforest, very cool. And although it has a big bar, the part where the rooms are is very quiet -- so slept very well. I'd definitely go back! — Vicky Miller , UK (2008-07-26)
Pretty awful! Stayed here as part of a package deal and wasn't impressed! There are not enough reception staff to deal with everybody for a start. Then you have to rent linen which didn't look particularly clean. On getting up to the dorm, there was a nice fat bedbug sitting on the mattress -- nice! So after requesting a change of dorm, new mattress looked a little better although noticed a cockroach scuttle behind another bed -- the wildlife that you don't want to see! Dorms not clean. There is a bathroom attached to the dorms with plentiful hot water which was ok. The bar and restaurant area was good with live music and a nightclub that was good to catch up with your crew after a Whitsundays trip. However, if you want to store your luggage at Magnums before going on your Whitsundays trip, it will cost you $5 for the privilege and they only open the luggage store at certain times which is very restrictive and annoying. Didn't test the kitchen -- the dorms put me off so much I wasn't even going to risk it! When you check out, they don't want your bottom sheet which is really dodgy -- how often do they get washed? — Becks , England (2008-03-21)
Poor Don't stay here unless you like rude staff and dingy dorms. There is a Breakfast room, not a kitchen, and they close the kitchen at 9 a.m. in the morning for cleaning. the staff are always too busy checking in new people and selling tours to bother about anyone who's already staying. Beware, they will only get your bags from storage when they want to, it's meant to be every hour but they never stick to it I wasted a lot of time waiting around! The best thing about the hostel is the gardens it's set in, very lush full of ponds and tropical plants. — Claire , British (2007-12-01)
Don't go! Staff really rude, and worse, this hostel is full of bedbugs. they ate me! — Lou , france (2007-11-02)
