The Hostelz.com Review

The Cambridge Hotel is a wonderful place to stay, whatever your budget may be. The backpackers is a only a small section of the larger hotel, located on one side of the ground floor. It has about 10 rooms, each holding 4-6 people, and offers very affordable backpacker rates despite being inside a nice hotel.

The bathrooms and showers are always extremely clean and are actually quite beautiful – lined with gorgeous tile, silver trim, automatic lighting, etc. The hallways and rooms are all carpeted. The bedrooms are spacious with high ceilings and wood paneling. The kitchen is large and clean and more than adequate. There is also a TV and dining room with tables for eating, large sofas, and a couple of computers with pretty cheap internet access.

The staff is available for assistance at reception until late at night, and are always friendly and accommodating to the needs of the guests. Connected to the hotel is a bar with pool tables and pokies, and a full service bistro. Backpackers get cheap breakfast deals.

The Cambridge hotel is located very centrally, close to the Te Papa National Museum, the civic center, the harbor, and all the coffee shops, bars, and restaurants for which Wellington is so famous. If you're headed to Wellington and you stay at the Cambridge Hotel, you will enjoy luxurious accommodation in backpacker style.

This is a hotel with a backpackers section. There is one communal room (kitchen, dining area and lounge) which is small and inadequate for the number of backpackers. The TV is always on. The bedrooms are very dark and those close to the bar are noisy at the weekend. The bathrooms are new and lovely, although the lights are on timers which is very frustrating. However tales of other Wellington hostels make this a good choice, there's so much to do in Wellington, hopefully you won't be in the hotel too long. It is also handy having a bar so close and the pub quiz is good fun!

Stayed here twice -- they have really cheap winter rates! Nineteen dollars per bed. One of my favourite places in New Zealand. Spacious, warm rooms with comfortable beds. Toilet and shower area was pristine with loads of both. The lights are on a timer though so you keep having to turn them on in the shower and toilet. The kitchen could be bigger though, at peak times it was hard to get pans and space to cook. All in all though, a great place to stay and really quiet. It was also nice to pretend I was staying in a hotel after months of hostels!

I stayed at the backpacker's wing for 3 nights just weeks ago and I felt the place was pretty average. The bathrooms - the so-called selling point - was flash and all that, but it's also unisex and some people may not feel too comfortable with that. The kitchen was a shocker and needed a lot of work - it's always dirty with used utensils and food scrapings lying everywhere. The cookware were also really old and grungy. The redeeming point about Cambridge is perhaps the firm, comfy bunk beds (and also the fact that the common area remains open 24 hours). The atmosphere wasn't too bad however, people there were generally quite friendly and chatty. But I probably wouldn't return to Cambridge in my next visit to Wellington owing to the dirty (and ill-equipped) kitchen.

Hard to believe this is actually a hostel. Felt more like a luxury hotel that just happens to have bunk beds. Location can't be beat, and the rooms themselves are beautifully decorated, with some of the comfiest beds I've encountered while backpacking. Bathrooms were spotless and had hairdryers and washer/dryers to do laundry. Kitchen and TV area were good to socialize. Recommended.

good location. easy to go downtown (theatre or food court, club) even if is quite far from the railway station. (you can take bus, and it is fast and often.) very reasonable price and clean dorm room.

One of the best hostels we have been in!!!! I stayed here for five days in June and had a great time. The location couldn't have been better, as it's right at the top of Courtney Place. The kitchen was always clean, and the bathrooms were amazing!!! It's just so clean, it well and truly has the feel of a hotel!! There's a good pub attached that does great food, too. What more could you want!?

While not the most friendly and cozy hostel, this is MOST DEFINITELY the nicest hostel I've ever stayed in. The bathrooms, showers, and rooms were sparkling clean and VERY spacious. The kitchen was well equipped, and it's located close to the nightlife as well as some great shopping!

After a horrible stay at a downtown Wellington backpackers (it had bedbugs, and I had to be moved out of my room twice) I gathered my refunded money and headed over to this place. Yes, it's more expensive but if you want a sparkling clean, friendly and posh place to stay, this is the place! It's perfectly located; the Cambridge Hotel made my memories of all those awful places disappear. Yes, it is also a bit "hotel-like," given that it is in one, and not as sociable or "party-happy" as some other backpackers, but it's a great place to have a good sleep, use a spick-and-span shower and have a secure place to keep your bags while you explore Wellington.
