The Hostelz.com Review
Dom Turysty, which means House of Tourists in Polish, is a huge hotel which offers a dorm room. Although the dorm beds are remarkably cheap, about 8 USD, the atmosphere of the rooms is a bit depressing. The bunk beds are wire cots which sag like hamocks, and the mattresses are thin foam pads. It also has the smell and look of a place that never quite gets aired out or cleaned properly. However, the bathrooms are very nice and clean and your location is right in the center of the town, so you are very near to all the pubs and restaurants and only a 10 minute walk from the bus station.
This is an acceptable place to stay, but you may also want to consider other options that are available in town. You can pay a bit more as a single traveller (or the same amount if you have two people) for one of the numerous private homes that rent lovely rooms. Many people stand near the bus station holding signs that read "Wolone Pojole" (or something like that... rooms for rent in Polish).

This hostel was odd. I agree about it feeling lonely, dark, and empty. If you've ever seen the movie "The Shining" the feeling was just like that. It felt haunted. It felt like it had a history, It wasn't some cookie cutter comfort inn. It felt real. The reception people were nice, but also a bit mysterious. We trusted them with our bags overnight as we spent thirty-six hours up in the Tatras with only our small backpacks. Everything came back intact. I would go back again. — Nikalas (2006-06-07)

My husband, my sister-in-law and I (all in our 50s or 60s) stayed here in October 2005. We were glad of the central location and the scrambled eggs for breakfast, not to mention the nice people working at the front desk and in the breakfast room. Also, it was handy to have a taxi representative on-site at all hours, especially since we had to catch a 5 a.m. minibus to the Slovakian border. The heat wasn't on yet in October, but I am sure it will be in ski season; there were plenty of blankets. What a great location! And what a picturesque building! We are glad we stayed at Dom Turysty and plan to return. A great value for the money. — Rebecca (2006-01-08)
I visited this hotel with my husband and two teenagers. It really was something to remember! The room didn't smell like it was cleaned but it was clean. The floors with the wall to wall carpet. The long, long corridors. And we were almost alone at the hotel; at least it felt that way. After travelling around for three weeks in Europe, I think this is the hotel that we will remember most of all. It felt like it was a remaining bit of an era passed a long time ago. Even though the standard wasn't that good I would like to get back there just because it was so different. — Tanja Ekblom (2005-09-18)
It's good enough for the money, but I wouldn't go again as a single female. I shared huge empty room with one older local man for the night, and I think he stole some gifts I had bought for family, as I noticed things missing later on. He was very rude and smelled of alcohol. The beds did indeed sag in the middle as I remember, too. The atmosphere is very barren and cold. — Anonymous (2005-06-13)
Well, this was an interesting hostel experience. If you want a taste of what buildings were like in Communist-era Poland, this hostel hasn't changed much in forty years. It was very dark in the long hallways and it never really seemed clean (read as: we didn't put our bare feet on the floor very often). If you arrive late, the restaurant will probably be closed — so don't count on eating there if you come at night. However, this hostel did have some redeeming features. The food was good and you could hear the river outside from the rooms. Also, the location of the Dom Turysty was very central and it was only a short walk to most of Zakopane. There is also parking right next to the hostel. Restaurants, pubs, etc. are all nearby. — Julia (2005-06-12)
This place had a strange atmosphere, and the room smelt funny and was pretty cramped. Don't try coming back late at night, as a lot of it is pitch-black. The toilets looked like something out of the 1930s. — Nick (2005-02-25)
Visit this hostel if you enjoy staying in a cheap room that's cold, damp and dark. The corridors leading to the rooms have very little lighting, and the place feels very unsafe. The hostel is empty, not surprising given its state, so the only people you are likely to meet are those hanging about in the corners of the dark corridors, smoking and drinking at all hours. There are no cooking facilities and no common room. The location is ideal, but it would be better to stay somewhere further from the town, where you could meet people and sleep in a warm and clean room. — Evelyn (2004-08-15)
