The Hostelz.com Review
The Torshavn youth hostel was rebuilt in 1999 and it is a modern affair with modern appliances in the kitchen and clean bedding. There is a bank of lockers but they are rather small. Each dorm is rather small and has 3-4 bunkbeds, but security is good for each room.
Við Oyggjarvegin is high up on the hill above Torshavn. The view is great but getting up and down from there can be a little tedious. To get there by bus involves walking from the ferry terminal into town to Steinatun and getting bus 1 which goes near the hostel, but the first bus is not until 0630 and you don't want to be worrying about when to get off the bus.
A major complaint is that priority is given to Smyril Line passengers coming off the Smyril Line ferry. The only way to book is using the booking@smyril-line.fo email address, but they rarely reply to enquiries (even during summer). This means risking a fairly arduous walk up the hill (or trying to work out the buses) to the hostel and hoping that not all 98 beds are taken or trying elsewhere. On the upside, many of the bus-tours of the islands leave from Hotel Foroyar.
Check-in is also unusual - the reception desk is in the adjacent Hotel Foroyar and it opens at 1400 (2:00 pm). The Smyril Line ferry arrives before 0600 (6:00 am), which means there is a long wait until you can have a shower and relax. Since check in is at the hotel, don't be surprised if the staff look down their noses at you.
