Landmannalaugur is a superb place. It is difficult to get to (even the buses have to have 4 wheel drive), but what a better way to spend an evening than enjoying scenic mountains and talking to holidaymakers.
The mountain hut is easy to find - as the bus pulls into the campsite (the only man-made thing in Landmannalaugur), staff from FI (the Iceland Touring Association) hop on the bus and explain the site's facilities and can take you across to the mountain hut.
It costs ISK1,700 or about the same as hostels or sleeping bag accommodation elsewhere, but since it is so isolated the facilities are a little spartan. The overnight charge includes a ISK200 service charge will allows use of toilets, sinks, and barbecues, but the shower is an extra ISK300 for just a few minutes - or a better option is to bathe in the outdoor geothermally heated springs nearby. It gets a little busy in the morning with people wanting to save money and bathing there as well, but it can be a sociable way to chat to locals.
There is a small shop with basic necessities, but it is safer to bring provisions for the night from elsewhere. It is a small hut and priority is given to people who have already booked a spot - or you can stay in a tent for ISK600.
Without a doubt Landmannalaugur is one of the most scenic places in Iceland. It is the start of the walking trail to Thorsmork, but even if you stay just one night it is a great way to relax in the great outdoors.
