The Sumpter Stockade Hostel is set right in the mountains about 22 miles from the nearest town which is Baker City. This hostel is very comfortable, has clean showers, and is very quiet. Staying at the Sumpter Stockade Hostel is like staying in an old west calvary fort. It even has a an old-fashioned fire pit for campfires at night.
This hostel is brand new, just opened in July of 2004 and everything is in good working order. The bunks are in an open barracks and have no lockers, but the manager offered to keep things in their safe for us. Their are three bathrooms and showers so we didn't wait for a shower or use of the bathrooms. The bathrooms are very large and spacious and everything was very neat and clean at all times. We brought our own towels, but towels are available if needed. They even have a washing machine and dryer available to use for a small fee.
This hostel is a very open, friendly place to stay. The environment is very conducive to making friends. We were not able to cook any meals inside the barracks, but were able roast hot dogs and marshmallows on the campfire in the compound and were also able to get soft drinks and coffee in the saloon.
The fort is surrounded by several hiking trails as well as snowmobile trails in the winter. A general store and restaurants are within walking distance of the fort. We were impressed with the tranquil setting and amazed that the local wildlife even walked right into the compound to eat out of the guests hands! The atmosphere is of the old west, rustic and quaint!
