The Hostelz.com Review
Backpacker's Travellers Inn represents excellent-value-for-money, budget-grade hostel accommodation.

The Location

Since the hostel is sandwiched on the second floor between a bustling restaurant and a small rooftop bar (both under separate management), you would be forgiven for not noticing it from the street. The hostel is in fact in one of the best locations in Kuala Lumpur -- the hostel boasts a prime location in Chinatown with a selection of street kitchens, cheap restaurants, and 7-11 stores on the doorstep, as well as a large night market. Major sights, such as the KL Tower, the Petronas Twin Towers, and Times Square are all within easy walking distance, as is the monorail connection for KL Central Station.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorm rooms are cramped, as many often are in large Asian cities, but clean and comfortable. For the price, the beds are good. Single-sex bunk bed dorms and private rooms are available. Nothing extra (including bed linen) is included in the price -- this is a budget hostel with no frills, which the owners continuously stress. Dorm room doors are locked by a key, although there are no personal luggage lockers within the rooms for valuables. Reception is staffed twenty-four hours a day and they are vigilant, so non-guests cannot just walk in off the street. The reception desk is also the place to go for information on the city or tours, and a free city map.

The toilets/showers are combined cubicles, the cleanliness of which varies depending on the time of day. They are, however, for the most part adequate and have all the accessories such as clothes hooks and a sizable shelf for toiletries. There seems to be too few cubicles for the number of guests at this busy hostel and queues are common in the morning when demand is highest. They are also mixed-sex facilities, which some female travelers may not like. Finally, toilet paper is not included in the bed price, so bring your own tissues or buy some here.

Common Spaces

Space is a rarity at this cramped little hostel, but most guests spend a lot of time out at the various eating and drinking establishments around about anyway. The main common areas within the hostel are the internet area -- a few computers and chairs next to reception -- and the bar, which does not belong to the hostel. The internet access is cheap and good and the area is clean. Wi-Fi access is available at an extra charge per day. Backpacker's draws a mixed clientele -- some are quiet, some are drawn by the proximity of the bar and want to party, and most though are just passing through en-route to somewhere else as Kuala Lumpur is a major airport hub.

Summary

Backpacker's is one of the cheapest hostels in a city full of cheap hostels, and you should keep this in mind when evaluating it. It is by no means a boutique hostel; however, as a budget hostel it hits the mark.

1  To say frankly it is z stars -- but the special experience in my life! nice location and cheap price cannot compensate ugliness of this hotel (in a prison style). we were so full, and payed beforehand, but after the first look ran away in panic, and did't care about wasted money for it! Rooftop is also awful, I complain I did't make it's picture! Had been shocked.  , RUSSIA ()
4  The Rooftop Bar here is just amazing! As a backpacker I found this place to be fabulous, it was clean for "asian standards" and cheap for Kuala Lumpur standards, other places remind me of the prices I pay when in Europe, very central, the Rooftop Bar is just fun, fun, fun and cheap, the barman here is just the best host I have ever met.  , Australia ()
2  Not the best I would say the hostel looks really exactly like a jail. I mean it is quite cheap, I agree. But it is not really clean and really old. I would not go there again. The stuff is friendly but the room was really horrible. I stayed in a single room with bathroom. If you really just look for the price it is ok. But if you also want to have a nice stay. then no. Even the rooftop is in a bad condition. Not like a nice bar or anything. choose another one.  , German ()
5  This reminded me of a Prison Cell, but was an excellent base whilst in Kuala Lumpur. Located in China Town, it was easy to see everything that we wanted, and close to amenities. After having no hot water for ages, it was also nice to get clean hot showers!! The best thing about this hostel was the management. They organised out trip to Taman Negara, and the Jungle train up to Kota Bharu after that. A definite recommendation - even if it does look a little dodgy!  ()
3  Good location; safe and friendly; cheap; you get what you pay for; good roof; and top bar with cheap beer.  ()
4  This place is clean, friendly, and the rooftop bar is pretty cool. If cheap and cheerful is your scene, you could do much worse.  ()
