The Hostelz.com Review
Adelaide's Shakespeare Backpackers Hostel is a great place to stay in Adelaide, with a very relaxed atmosphere. It is a family-owned and -managed business, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Also it is one of the cleanest hostel we've come across.
The Location
The hostel is located in the city centre of Adelaide, close to the Central Market/Chinatown, the Central Bus station, and Hindley Street Pubs. Peterpan Adventure Travel is located next to it, so you can easily book a tour to Kangaroo Island. Also you can easily park your car/campervan on the street behind the hostel, as it is a quiet area during the week. On the weekend there are two pubs on both sides, but Shakeys has thick windows so we've never been annoyed by the music/noise from the streets.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are excellent, the mattresses are thick and firm, the blankets have the Australian flag on them, and they have air conditioning. You can only sleep well! The bathroom are in good condition but located upstairs. Nevertheless you can still use the bathrooms on the first level for handicapped people. So you never have to wait for having your shower!
Common Spaces
The kitchen is excellent quality -- it is multi-bay and always very clean, with lots of facilities. The dining tables are new and in solid wood, and next to it is the TV room with a HD flat screen and great couches. The fans on the ceiling give a very relaxed atmosphere. The only thing we personally dislike is that the TV is always on, so you have breakfast with TV, lunch with TV, and dinner with TV. So it gives little chance to talk to other guests and to get to know them.
Summary
Shakeys Backpackers, as they like to be called, is one the best hostels in Adelaide. Everything is in good condition. And the staff really want to make you feel comfortable. So come to Shakeys and enjoy!

Not impressed! One star is very generous! As backpackers, we have stayed in lots of budget accommodation, and know what standard to expect. The standard of this hostel, however, can not be justified. Firstly, the hostel was full of long term guests who were quite comfortable in each others company, not so good for unsuspecting travelers. We were subjected to a live sex show in our bedroom, among other things! After that experience, we tried to change to a private double bedroom, which we got dreadfully overcharged for, and which ended up being a dorm room. The staff, especially one individual, were extremely unhelpful, and unpleasant. We were there in a group of ten people, and every single person had a very unpleasant dealing with the same person involved. During the course of our stay, we learned that the hostel had a very poor reputation. If only we had known this before we booked, it would have saved us a lot of heartache! — Elaine and Shane , Irish (2009-12-05)

This would have to be without a doubt the best hostel i have ever been in. Management were always keen to help me as i did not speak much english when i started traveling. The building is beautiful and there was always someone going around cleaning. I really do hope that i will be able to find other hostels as good as this one. — freddy gabbo (2007-03-22)
