The Hostelz.com Review
Station Lodge, a BBH hostel, is located in Ohakune Junction, about thirty minutes from Ohakune Township. It is conveniently located for skiing in the winter, hiking and visiting the Tongariro Crossing in the summer, and relaxing in between.
The Location
It is about a thirty-minute walk from the town of Ohakune and from the coach bus stops. Simply follow Miro Street from Clyde Street for awhile, and when the road forks at Rimu Road, go right and follow the street for a bit until you see some houses and businesses. Signs will point you to the lodge. It is in Ohakune Junction (which is made up mostly of lodges, cafes, and restaurants/bars), which comes alive in winter but is pretty dead in summer. It is also right by a railway stop, and there is plenty of parking available, and they offer city bikes if you want to go into town.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are very comfortable, and they offer everything from dorm rooms to private apartments. There are no lockers, but since the dorms hold only a few people, it isn't much of a problem. The doors don't lock from the inside, which may or may not bother you, but they do lock from the outside. The dorm beds are bunk beds, but there are also double beds available in the dorm rooms. The beds are very comfortable, with all linen and duvets provided, and the rooms are kept warm even though it can get quite cold.
The bathrooms are very nice, with a mixture of bathrooms and stand-alone showers and toilets. The showers have unlimited heat (although, when the hostel is full, they encourage you to limit your time), and good water pressure. They also have plenty of space inside the shower for you and your things, and plenty outside of it to change and hang your clothes. There are plenty of hooks and shelves around for your things as well.
Common Spaces
There are two lounges, each featuring a TV with cable television and several movies, games, magazines, and books. All of the furniture and technology is new and modern, making it a very comfortable place to relax. There is also a computer available for Skype and internet use. The kitchen is attached to one of the lounges and features a clean, moderately sized area with modern appliances. There are also couches outside on the porch and a spa pool in the back.
The hostel is relatively social, with a mixture of older travelers and young backpackers (since there is such a variety in rooms). Since it is an isolated part of a small town, people are more open to socializing in the hostel. It isn't much of a party atmosphere -- people are more likely to chat or watch a movie than party. In the winter, however, it can get a bit rowdier, since it is almost always booked.
Summary
This hostel is a great place to relax in the off-season, and a great base for outdoor activities as well. The owners are very nice and make every effort to make you feel comfortable, and the facilities are clean, comfortable, and modern. Although it is a bit out of the way, it is a great option in Ohakune.
