I stayed here April 2004 in one of the larger dorm rooms. The hostel felt a little tired, but it was clean and pretty well kept with a beautiful view of the water. I was only there for a night, but really enjoyed the city and my stay. — Val , USA (2007-04-20)

A good hostel in an absolutely beautiful area of Scotland's west coast. The hostel is right on the water (almost everything in Oban is) an features a comfortable lounge, and a large dining room. I was travelling with someone so being bored was not a problem, but it might not be the best hostel to stay at if you want to meet new people. We did, but the friendships were never anything more than superficial. Breakfast was not included, but there was a very large and well equipped kitchen. My only gripe was that the hostel is on the opposite end of the city from the train station. It was only a 10-15 minute walk along one street (the hostel is NOT hard to find, just continue walking keeping the water on your left), though. But with large bags it got to be a little much. There are lockers that you can use (for free, bring your own lock) but they are so inobtrusive that we didn't even realize they were there until our third night at the hostel. The rooms are quiet and comfortable, SINGLE SEX dorms, but you wouldn't want to spend any time in them. — Neil Langshaw (2006-09-16)
Everything is clean and fine, but the hostel is really like a hospital. If you want to get to know people, don't go there! — Jasmin (2005-10-15)

I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed my time at the Oban Youth Hostel! One of the staff (Philip) woke us up on Christmas morning with an impromptu bagpipe concert, and we shared our Christmas dinner with four different nationalities of people. We made fast friends from South Africa and Paris during our weeklong stay, and have exchanged visits with our Parisian friend already. The atmosphere was friendly and warm, the hostel was clean and well kept, and we felt ourselves very safe and slept well. A family of five (mother, father, and three adult children) recommend this hostel to anyone travelling through Oban! — Anna (2005-04-20)
I have stayed in many hostels before, but this one comes near the bottom of my list. Oban is a beautiful town surrounded by stunning scenery and excellent transport connections to the Highlands and Islands. I had a stunning view from my dorm over the bay. But, I have never in my time come across staff that are so rude and unfriendly. I booked it a few weeks before I arrived. On my arrival at reception I told the guy at reception that I had a reservation. He continued with his computer game and ignored me for ages. He eventually said to me gruffly "so what do you want?" I was shocked — I mean how about a room allocation, key, etc? I had already paid in advance or I would have walked out. When I EVENTUALLY got in, it wasn't great. My ten-bed dorm was clean and spacious, but the showers were cool and water pressure was poor. The self-catering kitchen was well equipped and the lounge comfortable. The main problem I had with this place was that it was like a hospital — clean, warm and comfortable but totally lacking in any atmosphere. The other guests were mainly couples and family groups who kept to themselves, the lounge was strictly a couple-only zone, and otherwise the place was dominated by large groups. In my three nights here I didn't really get to meet anyone or come across other lone travelers. I made a decision between here and Oban Backpackers, and if I ever return to Oban I will definitely give one of the other hostels a try. — Vicki (2004-12-07)
