The Hostelz.com Review
If you are looking for a hostel that is close to the airport, then Fernloft East Coast is a good choice. What makes it more of a good choice is that the hostel offers a free airport pick-up if you stay over a certain number of nights.
The Location
The location is over two hours walk from the city centre, but there is a very regular and reliable bus to take you in as the hostel is on a main road. Very close to the hostel are shops, supermarkets, lots of eateries, and a couple of nightspots. There is even a pub directly below the hostel that offers a free welcome drink, but the noise is not intrusive. Don't expect to have a session here, though, because the prices are high.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel is quite small and tucked away above a pub but it is well signposted. Remember to take your shoes off on the way up. You will quickly discover that the hostel is very small but well run. There are a couple of private rooms and a large dorm. The rooms are clean, secure, and well maintained with areas available to securely deposit your belongings. The rooms are also made up on a daily basis. Air-conditioning and a fan are available to keep cool -- an added bonus, considering that two of the rooms have no windows. The bathrooms are of a satisfactory quality with all you need.
Common Spaces
Given the small size of the hostel, when it comes to common rooms, the space is very well used. There is one main area that acts as a TV lounge/diner/internet desktop area/breakfast area. Breakfast is served daily here, but don't expect anything more than hot drinks and bread with spreads. There is a large DVD collection available to watch as well as Wi-Fi access for laptops.
When it comes to self-catering, the facilities are very basic. There is a microwave and cutlery and a sink, and that is about it. No fridge for guests' use either. A well-stocked book exchange is also available. The hostel always seems to have staff available, and you can get information and make bookings through the reception; although when arranging transport, it is probably cheaper to go direct, but more hassle. This cosy hostel has a relaxed and comfortable vibe to it, which makes it a perfect pit stop for any stay.
Summary
All in all, you cannot go far wrong by opting to stay here. Just be prepared to use the public transport to get into town; public transport in Singapore is cheap and efficient, so it is not a problem.

Misleading website -- Fernloft is a big letdown Fernloft East Coast website is totally misleading. We spent S $16 from the airport to get to this place, thinking of a clean and comfortable place to stay after long hours of travel and what did we see? An obscure place, with a tiny staircase leading to a tiny reception manned by an old man. The rooms were tiny, dark, dingy, and claustrophobic and the bathrooms were located at the far end of the corridor -- " at the back," as the man said. It was a big letdown. Don't be deceived by the website. It's a waste of money to even check it out. — Piona Lim , US immigrant (2009-04-19)

This is a decent place -- clean rooms with A/C and friendly staff. I came in on a late flight and their was a staff member downstairs in the bar who was very helpful. On the other hand, may be loud early at night -- the bar downstairs seems to close by 2 a.m. though. — Matija (2006-12-22)
