Excellent
I came to this hostel after a less than hospitable experience at a hostel closer to the airport. I was greeted by a friendly staff on my first day, and given a full breakfast. The layout of the building is spacious and the location is convenient to the city. Attitudes and service of the staff were top-notch. My bunk is comfortable and provides a good nights rest. Free internet service is great.

We stayed here during winter '06 and found Jason to be quite friendly and helpful. however, the place could do with some improvements. Firstly, we had to walk through what looked like a living room to get to our room, which wasn't a problem in itself, it's just that there was a bloke living in it that was sleeping continuously, day and night. Actually, it wasn't continuously -- he found time to get up in the wee hours and steal our beer from the fridge. There seemed to be a few people that were not so much travelers but residents. The place is also a fair way from the actual city but despite this, it's not a bad joint. Jason can't be blamed for it's location and the fact that one of his lodgers is a thief, although there is something about people that 'live' in hostels that leads me to be a little more than cautious than i would otherwise be.

i've stayed at a lot of hostels and the owner jason really goes the extra mile to make your stay as comfortable as possible. free internet, free breakfast, and even free dinners on occasion! he even has a playstation 2 to use for free (very nice when you are there in the winter!). occasionally the locals who stay there all winter can be annoying but thats in every hostel in alaska in the winter! what do you want for $20? if you are looking for the hilton then go there and spend $200 a night and ill stay here for $20!

Jason's International Youth Hostel is a cheap and nice place where you can stay. The breakfast is good and he sometimes even offers free dinner. The owner tries to help where he can if you have any problems. He drives you for a little fee where you want to go. The only problems I ever had were depending on the people who were staying there. But this can happen in every hostel. I would go there every time again.

Very very bad hostel. We came late at night and we were well received by Jason, a very weird guy but anyway seemed to be funny. I cannot complain about him at all, but that hostel it is just crap. We went to our room and we had to cross through different chambers to get ours, there were clothes scattered everywhere, simply chaotic and very disgusting. Although there was a closet all the things were just out there and seemed to be very disgusting. The shower was just something unbelivable, in fact didn't work, the top jet was out of order and if you wanted to wash your body you had to lay down on your knees and get wet there, crouched as an animal. what a shame. There was not even a table for breakfast and we had to eat breakfast on the couch. to cap it all it was just a sh*t of hostel and I don't recommend it.

After spending a grueling month in the Alaskan fisheries, the Jason International Hostel has been a wonderful place to indulge in rest and recuperation. I've never seen an individual hostel owner go to such lengths to please his customers as Jason has done. He provides a free nutritious breakfast every morning, access to three free internet terminals, and free long distance calling to anywhere in the U.S., Canada, or Puerto Rico. He even provides travel to or from the airport for only ten dollars, much easier than hassling with the temporary dyslexia of the public transit system. In the mood for an interesting conversation? Summertime here brings international travelers from all walks of life. I've never stayed in a better hostel.

Dirty, smelly, unfriendly, and unsecured is how I would describe this hostel. As one of my group commented, "the hostel is great, once you're out of it." We stayed here in June of 2006 for three nights (should of been four but our plane was a day late -- thank God for small mercies). We also had it booked for a further four nights after a kayak trip but cancelled due to all the above reasons. Its only redeeming feature -- it's with walking distance to REI. Look elsewhere before booking here.

I ended up staying at Jason's for almost two weeks while waiting for the job I was starting to begin. I have no complaints, good price, clean, free internet, and he'll feed you breakfast. A great place to stay if you're on a budget and need a cheap comfortable place to crash.

Hi all...I came up to see the Iditarod Race, and this place is very handy to bus lines, shopping, downtown...and the price! Awesome! You can't find a better deal in Alaska! I will come back here again and again...I have only good things to say about this Hostel.

This place sucks!!! We made reservations two months in advance for this place and arrived after a long flight from New York at 1 a.m. to find the place was closed by fire inspectors. The owner made no attempt to contact us beforehand so we could find other lodging.

I had a great experience the first time, and even a better one the second. Jason's a nice guy and goes out of his way for his guests. Thanks again, Jason!

This was the worst hostel I ever stayed in. I have travelled extensively around the world and I must say that this place takes the cake for being the most unkept, unorganized, plain rude and unaccommodating. I was a single female traveler when I stayed in June 2005, and it was the creepest experience of my life. The staff are a bunch or weirdoes... they climb their stinky bodies into the guests beds during the day to get sleep and don't change the sheets nor let the guest know that they took a nap in their bed... yea, quite strange. There are people staying there on the long term... and it is nestled in a real desolate neighborhood. They lie about providing sheets, internet access and bikes... they make you pay for this. They by far put a dent in the experience.

I made reservations at this hostel for a large group. I confirmed our reservation by phone and e-mail and also sent money to reserve the beds. I was assured time and time again that it would not be a problem for a group this size (about 40, for three nights). Jason had made arrangements with an apartment building nearby that he was planning on using for overflow. When the group arrived there was not enough room for all of them. I had to wake Jason up at 3 a.m. to have him find somewhere to stay. If there was not enough room, you should not have taken our money, Jason! I stayed at the main hostel and did not have that much better of a time. My first night I was woken by Chris, the self-important, bumbling assistant manager. He informed me that I was being moved across the hall. Drunken Russian students then kept me awake until 3:30 a.m. Chris and Jason made very little effort to keep them quiet until people in our room complained numerous times. I've stayed at a number of hostels in my time, and this is by far the most poorly managed hostel I have come across. Jason and his buffoon of an assistant refused to admit wrongdoing and I had to demand that they not charge the full price of the people in my group who did not have beds reserved. My company brings a lot of foreign students into Anchorage for short stays during the summer. I gave Jason a lot of business the week that I was there (close to $2000 I would guess) but it will most definitely be the last business he ever gets from my company.

This is a horrible place. They are housing people who work at the cannery, which means the place smells like cigarettes and the carpet is beer soaked. Don't believe the reception hours. I booked this hostel because my flight was supposed to get in late. Our private bedroom was actually the front bunk bed and they woke us as they got ready for work and had to pass through the front.

Jason's International Hostel is a very nice place and it's very inexpensive. It is very convenient, close to Wal-Mart, the city library, a movie theater, the University of Alaska, bus stops and so on. I would make a move to stay at Jason's if I ever come back to Anchorage. Great job, guys!
