"Best Hostel" in Anchorage I have stayed there on and off for three years. Its the only Hostel I would stay at. Especially in the Winter Season. No lock outs. Jason makes you a free "thats right" a free breakfast and every other day Dinner. He is very helpful in assisting those in need of directions. As in any Hostel things can get out of hand, all you need to do is bring it to his attention and he will attempt to resolve any issues that you might have. — Roger Gagnon , USA (2012-01-28)

Best i found out of 4 others between fishing seasons I was hurt commercial fishing, flew directly to providence hospital er and had to deal with theft, early curfews -- in be 9 pm or your on the street till morning. rude staff at 4 hostels till I FINALLY found jasons. free food and phone, international, local, free wed dinners and healthy food every morning. what a relief. also cable t.v, top notch internet and mr jason himself and the whole staff treated me like a king. Jason after seeing my situation actually cooked me a custom homemade soup and woke up for the first time in months with a feeling of peace and relaxation, on the way to recovery to go on to the chignik salmon fishery. dont waste your time trying to find a better safer cleaner hostel in Anchorage. — dan goodbody fisherman , washington state usa (2012-01-03)

Not bad, if you don't mind being asked for cigarettes all of the time Its not a bad place. Jason is a great owner and truly cares for the people staying there. The only problem is that I work nights and come back to find all of the common areas locked up, so I can't even make something to eat or watch a show on television. Most people are unemployed staying there, so this may not be an issue to them. Also, be expected to have an employee named Jennifer always asking for cigarettes, if you smoke. Benji is a cab driver and an employee here, and the guy is rude as f***. He vacuums at 1 in the morning, waking everyone up. Shirley is an employee as well, and she has the belief that the place is hers and will leave notes and reminders all over the place, with her orders and demands. She is just the maid and breakfast cook. Don't let her boss you around. The only normal one there is Jason, the owner. — Jack Mehoff , USA (2011-05-19)

Best hostel I've ever seen Funny place to stay. Jason's is a place with students' spirit & some spirit of 1960s. If you stay there several times or long period Jason gives you a discount. Mostly it was clean & neat. Free internet via Wi-Fi and some computers in a reception room. Free coffee, tea, noodles. Free breakfasts, sometimes free dinners and bbq. If you seeking for a quiet place, Jason's is not for you. But it is definitely best hostel in Anchorage. — ZUZIK , Russia (2010-04-06)

Friendly, economical, spacious, well located. I've stayed in several Anchorage hostels and Jason's is the best by far. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and Jason himself will ensure your stay is as enjoyable as can be. There are plenty of kitchen and common areas for everyone, all kept clean. The patio and gazebo are as fine as they come. Its location is central to everywhere you need to go: downtown, airport, theatre, library, restaurants, bookstore, and shops. Jason offers breakfast, plus all day coffee and tea. The dinners on Wednesdays rate three stars: full salad bar, generous entrée, dessert, and choice of beverage. The rates are better than the competitors too. You'll be sure to meet folks from all over the planet in friendly confines. — Richard Moore , USA (California) (2010-03-30)

Best in Anchorage Ive stayed at other Hostels in the Anchorage, AK area, Jasons is by far the best. it is very clean and the staff here are very very friendly, they have a great FREE breakfast every morning, coffee is served all day and every Wednesday evening Jason makes Dinner for all the Hostelers. the condition of the building is in great shape, Jason has hired someone full time to clean inside and outside the hostel, the outside area has a guest gazebo and two barbecue grills for guests to gather. I give Jasons Hostel a big thumbs up. other Hostels in the area cant compete With Jasons. — Ron Delaney , US (2010-01-07)

Very good Stayed here for 4 days Sept '09. Look for what you pay you really could not find a better hostel its clean, FREE internet, FREE pizza night, FREE breakfast, tea coffee, noodles, pastries, its clean although some of people staying were jobless or just hanging out I did not have any dramas with anyone. Jason and his staff were very hospitable, friendly, and made my stay a comfortable one. — Whitu Waaka , Australia (2010-01-01)
Druggie Center My husband is up there right now. He says you pay for a room with two bunk beds, four people to a room. Everyone drinking and doing meth in the bathroom. Guys and gals asking "Hey wanna pitch $10 for some speed?" He's sure some of the gals are drug addicted prostitutes. Thankfully he's now got somewhere else to stay. He said it was really dirty too. — RogueAlaska , USA (2009-10-27)

Average Location, there is two main areas of Anchorage. central city had a few central attractions, few museums, train station, average shopping, flea market in summer, river fishing for Salmon viewing area, and few other central attractions. Second main area in Anchorage, where the Jason Hostel is located, ten minutes to airport, walk to many major shopping (walmart, target) major movie house, many eating places, few museums. The central city is twelve minutes by cheap bus. three other hostel in immediate location.
This hostel has average amenities -- day room with large HDTV, four free nternet computers, always on hand helpful personnel, outside Ramada with ten chairs, average off street parking. I found the place to be of average cleans, average dorm size with adequate closet storage area. there was two group kitchens areas -- in main floor and on second floor. the owner very very helpful and put on a nice free dinner once each week for all guests. Two items i did not like when i made my reservation, they said they would pick me up at the airport free to the hostel. when i got in to Anchorage at 1 a.m. and called then, they said they had no way to pick me up and so i had to pay $19 taxi fare to the hostel. Also, i thought one of the day employees, a Young tall male, was rude and not very helpful. — hoboart , usa (2009-09-27)

Cheap as free You can find more thing than you have in your own home. weekly pay rate is $140 and thats it. you don't pay for food or internet or phone calls to anywhere. For a week you'll want to call places for job (if you are looking for job) or your family or girlfriend/boyfriend at least two or three times, which is at least $10. In here there is really good free breakfast and dinner once a week. In a restaurant you would pay $20 for that dinner. Nowhere else has twenty-four hours hot water shower and soap and towel (everything is as clean as a hotel). you will absolutely need to send e-mail to your friends, then you'll have to go library or even if you have your laptop then you will have to go somewhere to access internet. Your time is priceless. — serhat cetinkaya , turkish (2009-08-25)

Very friendly and helpful staff I went to Anchorage at 12:30 am -- it was late flight. Mr. Jason met me at the airport, brought me to hostel, showed me around. What I wanna say, it is very friendly, what is important for me, a person from Russia. There is no curfew, which means you can come back at any time you wish. Here is free high speed internet -- computers and Wi-Fi. Long distance phone calls are free of charge. Breakfast is free of charge as well. I want to thank all staff -- Marcus, Mr. Jason. They are very friendly and helpful. They showed what is where around the town. I can recommend this hostel to all independent travelers. — Victor from Koenigsberg, Russia , Russia (2008-06-30)

Excellent I came to this hostel after a less than hospitable experience at a hostel closer to the airport. I was greeted by a friendly staff on my first day, and given a full breakfast. The layout of the building is spacious and the location is convenient to the city. Attitudes and service of the staff were top-notch. My bunk is comfortable and provides a good nights rest. Free internet service is great. — w.frederick brown , USA (2008-03-22)

We stayed here during winter '06 and found Jason to be quite friendly and helpful. however, the place could do with some improvements. Firstly, we had to walk through what looked like a living room to get to our room, which wasn't a problem in itself, it's just that there was a bloke living in it that was sleeping continuously, day and night. Actually, it wasn't continuously -- he found time to get up in the wee hours and steal our beer from the fridge. There seemed to be a few people that were not so much travelers but residents. The place is also a fair way from the actual city but despite this, it's not a bad joint. Jason can't be blamed for it's location and the fact that one of his lodgers is a thief, although there is something about people that 'live' in hostels that leads me to be a little more than cautious than i would otherwise be. — MR T , Australia (2007-04-22)

i've stayed at a lot of hostels and the owner jason really goes the extra mile to make your stay as comfortable as possible. free internet, free breakfast, and even free dinners on occasion! he even has a playstation 2 to use for free (very nice when you are there in the winter!). occasionally the locals who stay there all winter can be annoying but thats in every hostel in alaska in the winter! what do you want for $20? if you are looking for the hilton then go there and spend $200 a night and ill stay here for $20! — jeff (2007-01-29)

Jason's International Youth Hostel is a cheap and nice place where you can stay. The breakfast is good and he sometimes even offers free dinner. The owner tries to help where he can if you have any problems. He drives you for a little fee where you want to go. The only problems I ever had were depending on the people who were staying there. But this can happen in every hostel. I would go there every time again. — anja (2006-09-03)
