The Hostelz.com Review
Makuto Backpackers Hostel is a busy and popular hostel with young people from all over the world. The famous Alhambra can be reached from the hostel on foot or by mini bus from the main road. Situated in an old quarter of the city, it gives you a sense of being in old Granada. At the same time, because it is located on a very crowded narrow street, it can be very noisy at night. Several dogs in the neighborhood bark, particularly at night thus it may be difficult to get some decent sleep at night. You can also hear the neighbors talking and passersby talking late at night as well as very early in the morning.
There are two bedrooms on the street side of the house. They are very small -- six beds in a room feels too cramped in. The room can be quite hot in summer -- there are no fans or air conditioning in the rooms. The beds are quite squeaky. Besides these two bedrooms, the hostel has put in bunk beds in the alcove in the hallway, covered by curtains for some privacy. They have also created sleeping spaces in the loft in the hallway which provide private space but can be very hot in summer since there's no window up in the loft. There are also beds in the basement area.
There are three shower stalls and three toilets in the bathroom. The showers have push buttons for water, which have no control for water temperature. For hot summer days the water is just too hot. One of the shower stall button only provides water for five seconds so it's very inconvenient to take a decent shower. The other stall buttons last about twenty seconds. The shower stalls are small but manageable but their floors and tiles are rather scummy.
Lockers are available with a deposit. The kitchen is available for cooking, but there is only one small electric stove with two burners, so if you try to cook at the busy time, you may need to wait a while. The hostel offers various meals daily at reasonable prices and the bar also offers several different drinks daily.
The hostel offers various common spaces for their guests to relax and hang out. It has a nice courtyard where people can hang out and eat. There are several hammocks in the courtyard too. They also have a "chill room" where people can hang out to smoke and relax, as well as a TV room.
This hustle bustle hostel attracts many young people from all over the world. Although overall sleeping spaces are very crowded and jammed, with their many common hangout spaces, you can relax and meet other young people. However, if you're looking for a quiet place for decent sleep at night, this place may not be your best choice.

The most radical! The best hostel I stayed at while backpacking. The best staff, and met many people I consider friends now. Definitely a good place to stay to experience Granada! — Katie , United States (2008-01-28)

Great I was on interrail this summer and stayed at the makuto guesthouse, and I simply just love it. the staff is so nice and everybody talks with everybody. just great. I really wish that I will return to Granada and the makuto guesthouse someday. — Helene , Denmark (2007-10-11)

Incredible The staff was amazing and there's an extremely welcoming atmosphere waiting for you upon your arrival. If you're feeling tired and would rather eat in they serve great dishes and have good deals on beverages on site. Otherwise, the staff were extremely helpful in directing us to must-see places around the city and good spots for Tapas. The atmosphere they've created at Makuto shows how much the owners care about backpackers' comfort. — Winston , United States (2007-06-16)

It was really great to stay here. I've met very nice people. — Fanny , Holanda ( the netherlands) (2007-05-07)

My favourite hostel of a year-long RTW trip. The beds may be crammed into the rooms, but the warmth and friendliness of the staff makes up for it. Very recommended. — Louisa (2006-08-03)

After ten years of travelling around the world, I have stayed in my fair share of hostels. Quite simply, Makuto Guesthouse is up there with best. When coming to Granada, Spain, there is only one choice. — Janet Holmes ,USA (2005-04-12)

Awesome hostel. The hosts Sonia, Anthony, Kaine and Caroline are excellent. They have facilities such as free Internet, breakfast, hammocks, a chill out area and much more. Go and discover MAKUTO. — James Troy, Australia (2005-04-05)

The warmest welcome that you'll get on your travels is at the Makuto Hostel. The location of the hostel and the staff are excellent. They have hammocks, a chill-out area, and activities, e.g. hiking, cooking, wine tasting, flamenco lessons, and ceramic and crafts courses. They also have the best masseur on site and their paella is to die for. It's simply the best. — USA (2005-03-18)

The staff are indeed very friendly and helpful here. However, there are some negative aspects to the hostel as well. Namely, the rooms are VERY cramped, breakfast is frozen bread, the free Internet is almost always inaccessible, the hostel can be difficult to find, and it feels more like a campground than a hostel. For actual backpackers it's a good place but for short-term travelers like myself, it is not as great of a fit. I would recommend it because the atmosphere is good but don't go expecting wonders. — Anonymous (2005-02-25)

This is a truly fantastic place, the owners/hosts are really friendly and helpful, the facilities are top-notch and clean, and the value for money is great, too. It feels like being with a really cool family. I came for four days and stayed nine — it was a joy. — Dan Brown (2004-12-22)

This is a home away from home. It has free Internet, breakfast, and wine tasting and cooking courses with excellent hosts: Anthonio, Sonia, Candela and Kaine. Life is beautiful in Granada. This is the BEST guesthouse in the world. — Sarah Jones USA (2004-11-23)

The owners, Anthonio and Sonia, were fantastic and the host, Kaine, was great. It's the best hostel in Granada and Spain. Go and discover why. — Anonymous (2004-11-02)

This was more than just a hostel; it was my favorite part of the vacation. The accommodations are more than great and the couple is the sweetest you will ever meet. They genuinely care for everyone and help them see the city and enjoy it. Granada is great and this hostel is too!!! — colleen bailey (2004-07-14)

Makuto Guesthouse is quite simply top class. The welcome makes you feel like one of the family and they offer free breakfast, Internet, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, wine tasting and Spanish cooking courses. Then there's the chill-out area and hammock garden. Quite simply the best. I'd give it 6 stars! — Martha Thomas (2004-07-05)
