The Hostelz.com Review
From first appearance, Backpackers Downtown Logde looks like a nice little place to stay, and the sign outside the door advertises a low rate, which includes breakfast. You might think you have landed yourself a deal! The staff at Downtown are laid back and chilled. However, this is a flaw when you require information about the Queenstown and Wanaka area.

When first entering the dorm accommodation, the impression is that it's mainly used by long-stay travelers. The walls are shabby and dirty and the en-suite bathroom is dirty and looks like it hasn't been cleaned for months. The shared toilets and showers are dirty with hair and mud smeared on the walls. The bunks themselves are dirty, the sheets look as if they haven't been cleaned, and the mattresses are lumpy.

If you fancy some entertainment by watching television, you may have to fight with the long-termers for the remote control. Although once you have the remote, the hostel does have some cable television channels -- good for a rainy day. However, the seats are scruffy, old, and again, dirty!

Breakfast is somewhat of a let-down -- just some bread left in the middle of the kitchen -- and you find yourself washing up knives and forks before you can even start having your toast! The hostel does have free internet, on two Apple computers in reception and two in the kitchen, but speeds are slow.

Although the staff were friendly, this was by far the grubbiest hostel I stayed in throughout New Zealand. The whole place just looked rundown with threadbare carpets and grotty, torn furniture in the communal areas. I wouldn't advise against staying here as it is in a great location and very cheap -- but just be aware of how downtrodden it is (the main description is no sour minded exaggeration). I would definitely advise against paying $2 for a "quilt" though -- just a polyester roll covered in dubious looking hairs! There are plenty of other options you can checkout before resorting to this hostel.

It costs 25 New Zealand dollars per en suite dorm, but it has with free breakfast and Internet. The place is a bit busy and crowded. If you want to have a bit of space to relax in a quite place, this may not be a preferred one. But I must say that people are nice, including Amy from reception, and friendly, too. The shower and toilet is okay but there was no hair dryer. The facility is average. Again, the place is a bit narrow. The laundry: you'll probably have to wait for an available one. The dorm room is a bit dirty, I would say, but generally it's okay. The location is fantastic because it's in the heart of the downtown. No worries at all, and only one minute to the lake and all other restaurants.

I stayed in this hostel, and I had probably the best time of my life here. They even shifted me across the road and put me up in a flat. If you're looking for fun and new friends, this is the place.

Three friends and I just returned from a holiday in Queenstown, and throughout our ten days in Queenstown we stayed at 'Backpackers Downtown Lodge' in Shotover Street. We've all agreed that we had almost just as much fun staying here as we did flying down "Homeward Bound" (a ski run) in two feet of fresh powder at Remarks (a nearby skiing area). The staff at this place deserve a medal for the way in which they go out of their way to make you feel welcome (especially Amy). I would go as far as saying they provided us with the friendliest, most efficient customer service while we were in New Zealand. Apart from the stellar service, they provide spacious, comfortable rooms at affordable prices. It's just the place for "somewhere to relax after a long day" and like it says in the description, it has a "fully-equipped kitchen and relaxed dining and living area." The Lodge also offers free Internet, and oh, don't forget the free breakfast! We all stand for this little home away from home; we would recommend it to anybody who ventures to this part of the globe. It's a real credit, you guys; keep up the good work. We give this place 5 stars out of 5.

"Classic kiwi retro style" rooms? My twin had a window that did not close (in sub-zero temperatures) due to a missing latch, taps that would not shut off, and a bed that was balanced on some bricks. Overall, the hostel is kept as clean as its shabby and dilapidated condition will allow. People under 20 years old may appreciate the school-trip feel engendered by people running amok in the hallways until the early hours, but if you are looking for somewhere to relax after a long day, or you are just partial to sleeping at night, don't stay here.
