The House of Harmony Backpackers is located on a quiet hillside overlooking the beautiful Hokianga Harbour.
Guests share two communal kitchens and two bathrooms.
The hostel sleeps 13 guests only ensuring a friendly and homely atmosphere.
House of Harmony is not suitable for those travelling with young children.
The Opononi General Store, Pub, Cafe and Wharf are a short stroll away.
Opononi boasts a beautiful sandy shore lined by pohutakawa trees. You can catch fish from the wharf or for the more adventurous you can catch The Hokianga Express boat across the harbour to the sand dunes for a sandboarding experience.
'Opo the Friendly Dolphin' made Opononi famous in the summer of 1955-56 when it entertained locals and tourists alike in their thousands.
The New Zealand Government even passed a law prtoecting Opo but sadly in 1956 Opo was found washed up dead on rocks. The cause of death still causing controversy nearly a half a century later.
A statue in Opononi commemorates Opo's visit.
