The Hostelz.com Review
Manta Lodge is situated on the south side of Stradbroke Island, one of only two backpackers on the island. Its affiliated dive school on site is why many people come here.

The hostel is immaculately clean and well equipped with plenty of storage and free tea and coffee. An outside eating area and BBQ make it an ideal place to chat about diving adventures. There is also a large TV combined eating area with a pool table and a good selection of DVDs and videos along with a healthy book exchange and wireless internet (although expensive at $6 an hour).

The dorm rooms are large enough to accommodate everyone without tripping over each other with units for storing bags and a small table. There are however no lockers in the room. The bathrooms are clean, with separate female and male shared bathrooms on each floor.

The only problem with the hostel is that it can get overrun with large groups that use the diving facilities for the day. There often seems to be more staff than guests in the evening too.

There is a shuttle on Mondays and Fridays from Brisbane to the island however there must be a minimum of 3 people for it to run. To get there from Brisbane catch the train (around $4) and then the ferry across ($12 with your YHA card ask for student rate) then the local bus that waits for the ferry to arrive ($5). Although it is a journey and a half from Brisbane it is well worth diving off the East coast backpackers trail for the desolate beaches and the pristine sea where you can see turtles, dolphins, and of course Manta Rays.

3  Nice Island / Hostel is is fairly laissez-faire great beaches and really quiet place to tune out. The hostel is not so chill out though, nights are noisy with drinking and games. Great if you are after a party atmosphere. staff are pretty useless and you get the feeling that the hostel exists for them and that the guests are just along for the ride.  , ENgland ()
3  Oh, I loved it! The Straddie tours were just great, and the beaches were heaven compared to the beaches back home. The only complaint I have would have to be about the transport. I got a very disagreeable bus driver, I think people call him Brycon. He was very rude and didn't give my change back. That ordeal ruined my stay on the island.  ()
