Barnacles Seaside Inn, the Paraparaumu YHA hostel, is situated just across the road from a long, sandy beach -- a great location if the weather is right. If not, there is not much to busy yourself with around here, except an automobile museum.
The hostel itself is a quaint, colonial-style building with appropriate decoration and furnishings. Although the house is large, you do feel rather cramped, as the space is not very generously divided up. The communal areas are small to say the least (two round tables with a few chairs crammed into the TV lounge, which adjoins the smallish kitchen). The kitchen is ok, although maybe not the cleanest -- and ridiculously small for the number of people the hostel can accommodate.
The bedrooms are standard size, not too crowded, and with washbasins directly in the rooms. Toilets and showers are plentiful and clean -- no complaints here whatsoever. All in all it is not a bad place if you can deal with the limited communal areas -- the location is A-plus.
