The Hostelz.com Review
Barnacles Seaside Inn Hostel is a friendly little place right near the beach in Paraparaumu. The nice lady who runs the front desk will give you a tour of the old hotel building and introduce you to the other people staying in the hostel. You can read about the history of the building and the area from the various newspaper clippings and photos framed on the walls.
The Location
After you pass through a large industrial area, the hostel is located right next to the beach and around the corner from a few cafes and a very small foodmart. There is not much to do in the little town and practically everything is closed over the winter months, so you might end up chatting to two or three locals at the bar down the road. Paraparaumu is about a forty-five-minute drive from Wellington, and although it is not the most exiting beach town, it is an option if you want to get away from city life. There is a bird sanctuary on Kapati Island and the hostel staff can help you make arrangements to visit the island. Barnacles is a great place to stay if you do end up here for a night.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel used to be a hotel, so the small two- to four-bed dorms are converted rooms. The place has a very quaint character and it feels like staying in your grandma's house with doilies on the wooden side tables, old photos, and newspaper clippings on the walls. The hostel seems very safe and there are keys for each dorm room so you can lock your belongings inside. The bathrooms are very clean and spacious with plenty of showers.
Common Spaces
Overall the hostel seems to be an older crowd with a few locals hanging around and very quiet although everyone is friendly and will give you directions to the local pub. There is a common area with a TV and couches attached to a kitchen and dining room. There is plenty of space for storage in the refrigerators and everything you need to cook. There is also an outdoor space with picnic tables and a barbecue, great for sunny afternoons. Internet is available but there isn't a designated internet lounge. Laundry is also available.
