The Hostelz.com Review
The Gisborne YHA is a laid back, clean, friendly, roomy, and extremely comfortable place to stay. It's quiet and mellow, perfect for those seeking a change from the bustle and party atmosphere of large city hostels, or for those looking for a place to chill out. Gisborne town is a beautiful but unfortunately often overlooked area of New Zealand. An initial two-night stay turned into four, and would have gone even longer if our schedule had allowed it ... We truly felt spoiled here!

Clive and his wife (and two friendly outdoor cats) have spruced up the place since purchasing it about 5 months ago. The bulding itself is newly painted, and the bathroom and showers are in immaculate condition with immediate hot water. All common areas are washed down, cleaned, and put into tip-top condition each morning.

There are comfy beds, larger than average share and dorm rooms, and several double/twin rooms. The kitchen is huge, with eight gas burners and two full sinks; there are cubbyholes for individual storage, freezers, and an entire wall's worth of refrigeration and counter space. It's also fully stocked with all cooking necessities. Bins for recycling plastics, glass, and cardboard are set beneath the counters. And if you don't feel like cooking or going into town, there's a popular Chinese and Fish & Chips "Take Away" across the street.

The common room is also large, with full sofas, wall chairs, and tables, a TV, phone, and stocked travel brochure display. There's a coin operated washer and dryer, as well as outdoor laundry lines.

Two things make this hostel stand out above the other alternatives. First, it's owner managed. Clive and his wife live in an adjoining cottage, and the pride they take in the care and upkeep of their "extended home" is clearly evident, as is their concern for the well-being of their guests. Second, they're Gisborne natives so you can trust their recommendations for places to see, eat, and shop (and surf and golf)!

The only thing lacking is internet access, but there are at least three internet cafes in town that will allow you to plug in your laptop; they're just an easy (flat) ten minute walk away.

The hostel is a 20 to 30 minute walk, depending on your speed, from the Gisborne information center (buses arrive and depart from here) to the hostel. Walk up Grey Street to Gladstone (Gisborne's main street), turn right and follow the road. Walk over the bridge and Gladstone turns into Wainui. The hostel will be on your right, on the second "block" at the corner of Wainui and Harris. (Look for the video store on the left hand side across the street.)
