We got there and the hostel seemed kind of dirty, but apparently they were overbooked and they upgraded us to one of their apartments, which was beautiful. If you have more than four in your group and aren't looking for the hostel experience, definitely request the apartment. It is also very well located, and was very clean.

Let me start with the Cons:
The sign for the place is smaller than a postal envelope. The walls are very thin and far from sound-proof. The toilet seats keep falling off and the wiring in the bathroom could've been done by a monkey. The water smells like sulphur and overall, it's really not that clean.
Pros:
That said, the head of the outfit, Igor, is extremely friendly, as are all of his English-speaking staff. The location is perfect, close to Nevsky Prospect and a number of obvious tourist attractions. It's right next door to a great 'Honey' products store. It's also close to Green Crest restaurant, the greatest vegetarian fast food place I've ever been to.
Zimmer Freie could definitely be a lot better, but I've also seen far worse. Igor needs your support to help upgrade the place. If you want to live cheaper and friendlier than HI and get an interesting Russian experience, come here.
