The Hostelz.com Review
YHA Newcastle Upon Tyne is very easy to get to -- the simple Newcastle Metro system is easy to figure out. From the Central train station, take the Coast line to the third stop (Jesmond), then take a left (east) on the main road after you come out of the metro stop. The hostel is a five-minute walk on the left side of the street (there is a sign just as you come out of the metro station, but no others, unfortunately).
There are no surrounding facilities close (bars, restaurants, or markets), so if you're self-catering, get your supplies beforehand. The self-catering kitchen is tiny, so we wouldn't recommend cooking a meal for a large group. Postcards and some canned goods are available at the friendly check-in desk (although we'd suggest checking the expiration date on the food).
The dorms are quiet despite being next to a fairly busy road. They consist of beds in the large, clean rooms, and plenty of clean bathrooms/showers.
Twenty-four-hour access is available -- if you're planning on returning after 11 p.m., you'll need to get a door access card (like a hotel key) from the front desk. A delicious breakfast is included and cooked to order -- options are traditional, vegetarian, or continental. They don't require a key deposit but do ask for a small donation for luggage storage. Sheets are provided. There's a bed/kitchen lockout between 10 and noon for cleaning.
