The Hostelz.com Review
The Cambridge YHA is the one of the cleanest and best looking hostels in England. It is only a short distance from the Cambridge train station and a few kilometers from campus. It is a large hostel with a cafeteria and large lounge. It is not the most social of hostel, but if you are looking for a quiet night's sleep, this is the place.
The dorm rooms are large and clean with a sink in the room. The beds come with a sleeping sheet and blanket. But the beds are not the most comfortable; it felt like sleeping on the floor. There are several water closets located on each floor that are new and surprisingly clean for a hostel. The shower areas are clean. Each shower is situated in its own little room, allowing enough room to dress in private. The lounge is big and features several comfortable couches and a TV in the corner. There is a pool table and games available for a small deposit.
The hostel is very secure, requiring a key card to enter into the main part of the hostel and into your room. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There is no curfew, but there is a nightwatchman who guards the front door after 11 p.m. A full English breakfast is provided in the morning, for a fee. However, the hostel does provide a free breakfast ticket on your first night there.

I liked the atmosphere and the friendliness of the staff. It really was a nice place except for all the surprise expenses that occurred after my arrival.

It was fine, the room was clean and all facilities were good. We got a private triple so we didn't have to separate into boys and girls.

This is a very basic hostel. It just provides you with a bed (that was clean and comfy, I must say this), then everything else (internet, breakfast) must be added to the first price (which is the one shown at the moment of booking) and makes it almost 10 pounds more per day. The toilets are very small and scattered all around so you get a lot of people walking in the aisles until late. I must say that I was there at the same time as a big schoolclass of teenagers was, so my judgment on the "noise" point can be biased. The common rooms were alternatively too crowded (game room) or stinky and sad (TV room) to stay in. The kitchen was big and well equipped though, the staff members were really nice and helpful, and the location is very good, 5 min from the Railway Station, 10 min from the bus stop in Parkside, 15 min from the main colleges (but far enough to have a quiet sleep on a saturday night, which I guess would be hard to get in the city centre). Very close there is Mill Road with lots of cafes where you can get breakfast (and free wifi!) for reasonable prices. All in all the cheapest accomodation in Cambridge and quite acceptable depending how flexible you are and what you are expecting from a hostel.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews

Enjoyed my stay I was there Christmas of '95, and stayed for about a month. The rooms and facilities were clean and the staff was excellent. The kitchen had all you needed to cook (it was self-serve then), and the furnishings were more than adequate. It is not a five-star hotel, but provided an excellent base from which to reconnoiter Cambridge. — Carl Stannard , Canada (2009-07-23)

Ok but not great by any means I was surprised to read the "exclusive review." The lounge is large and comfortable, and there's a second lounge. There is no pool table (as of June 2008). Breakfast now comes with each night's stay. Our room was unclean with dirt on the floor. It had an en-suite, which needed an overhaul, but was tolerable. Dining area was quite clean but the cutlery was unclean and the glasses were filthy! There were no lockers for valuables. School/social groups were loud and annoying. The saving grace -- an excellent and very helpful chef who obviously enjoys what he does. I wouldn't stay here again. — Monika , Australia (2008-07-09)

I stayed here March of 2004 and met some great people (shout out to my friends from Trinadad and New Zealand!). We cooked for five different nationalities one night in the kitchen. The hostel itself was a little tired but clean with a good breakfast in the morning (get there early though!). I had some trouble finding it from the bus stop, but it wasn't a bad walk and located a reasonable distance from the sites. Good times -- nice city. Try a punt down the Cam! — Val , USA (2007-04-20)
This youth hostel is worse than poor -- I have never been to a dirtier and more disgusting place in my entire life. The staff was unfriendly -- it was the highlight of the day to be able to leave the hostel every morning. — Fran (2006-10-29)

This hostel has friendly and helpfull staff. The bedroom was clean as so were the showers and toilets. The breakfast copious and good. I had a very pleasant stay and I recommend it! — Lynna (2005-01-05)

It was okay! And the staff were very helpful! But at mealtimes the place was very full, and sometimes you didn't get any food if you were the last to come! — Denis (2004-10-25)

The breakfast was bloody marvelous. It had a nice staff and a nice
big lounge. — Nick (2004-07-22)

Not a bad experience to be had here. The staff were polite and friendly. It could do with a little more competition, considering it is the only hostel in the area. I would stay here again, and I recommend it. — Gary (2004-05-25)
