The Hostelz.com Review
YHA Bath is an attractive, quiet, and very private hilltop hostel. It's an interesting contrast to the vibrant city of Bath. Though it is entirely possible to walk up and down the hill, it is inconvenient to return mid-day and a long walk at any time (there is a bus, and free parking). The hostel is great for those who want security and peace. It is set back in the woods, rooms have locked doors and lockers, and you need a code to enter the hostel at night. The single-sex dorms are clean, with cozy modern furniture, big windows, and sinks. Toilets and showers are shared and are co-ed.

If you arrive early or depart late, they will hold your bags for free. Internet is available, but expensive - better to use a cafe. There is a bar with decent drinks that closes at 11pm, and a cafe serving cheap breakfasts, "picnic lunches", and dinners. The guest kitchen is large and very clean (as is the rest of the hostel), with plenty of storage, counter space, and appliances. While there is no grocery nearby, some packaged foods are available in reception. Attached to the kitchen are a large eating area with lots of tables, a large and sterile lounge with a TV, and a cozier lounge with a nice porch. The entire hostel is non-smoking, but there are picnic tables and a porch outside. Laundry facilities are available.

The staff is professional, and can help you book your next stay at another YHA hostel, but is not outwardly friendly. Prior HI membership is not necessary, as you can purchase it cheap when you check in.

Guests of this secluded hostel are not nearly as friendly as in most independent (non-HI) hostels. It is possible to start conversations, but you must make an effort. Most seem to spend the day in Bath and the evenings in their rooms. The lounge with sofas is the best place to meet other guests, including solo travelers of all ages, groups, and families. These are serious travelers with big plans, not just kids looking for a party.

Directions: From Bath Spa RR Station or Bus Station: Walk up Manvers Street (which turns into Pierrepont Street) toward the Parade Gardens. Turn right on North Parade Road and cross the bridge. After the cricket grounds, turn left on Pultney Road. At the roundabout, make a steep right turn up Bathwick Hill. The hostel is not very well marked - look out for a bus shelter on the right side, and just after this an arrow on the right points left to "Youth Hostel." Turn left at the small green sign for "YHA" across from Claverton Lodge, and follow the signs up the hill (15-20 minute walk up a steep hill) or take the number 18 bus from the bus station.

Fine days we had at the hostel this easter 2007. A very interesting house indeed with a great view from the hill to the city below, which is the most beautiful city I ever saw! The people working in the hostel were all very kind and also the room we had was ok. I'm sure I will come back soon.

we spent a couple of days around the new years eve in 2006 in this hostel. it was the third time in twelve months that I stayed in the bath yha hostel. the staff were also very friendly. the kitchen, dining room, bathrooms, and showers have been cleaned every day. there is a bus stop twenty meters in front of the building and a bus service goes every twenty minutes to the city centre and railway station (cost 90p per person) and takes only ten minutes. I do recommend this yha hostel, and the city of bath too.

Stayed there this spring with my 14 year old daughter. They were in the midst of a massive grounds refurbishment, and I think the grounds will soon look as lovely as the architecture. There were many folks absent during the day. I enjoyed a Canadian coed high school sports team (VERY well behaved). Facilities clean and comfortable, staff worked with us to find accommodations at last minute and were quite kind.

I stayed in this excellent hostel last summer. One night was too short of a time to be there. The city of Bath was so beautiful and nice! Hostel has very great location. In spite of the fact it was in the middle of the city, the place was peaceful. The house was so lovely! I will go there again some day..

This hostel is great! Clean, friendly, helpful. It's not the most centrally located place to stay in Bath but it's well worth the great walk or easy bus ride to stay in this beautiful house! Definitely stay here!

I stayed at this hostel in May. I was with my school and we were doing a murder mystery. We thought they made it such a good holiday we are going to go to the YHA in London. We hope it will be just as good next year as it was this year. The staff were lovely. Thanks very much.

I stayed in this hostel just before Christmas, and the atmosphere was fabulous—from the marble floors to the Christmas tree! The kitchen was well-stocked and extremely clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They even pointed out discounts we didn't know about. There were many single travelers there, as well as families. The walk into town down the hill was beautiful and well worth the 20 minutes through green pastures and past small streams. The bed was really comfortable, and the bathroom was clean and warm! I would definitely recommend this place—just catch the bus there from the station as the walk up the hill is a bit of an effort with a pack! Lovely!
