The Hostelz.com Review
This hostel is actually an annex to the main hotel building and hence is quite a smart place to stay. Located in the small ski village of Whakapapa, it is very popular in the winter ski season but also in the summer when many local great walking tracks become accessible. It is just a short distance from Tongariro National Park, home of the Tongariro crossing which is considered one of the best day walks in the world.
This is the perfect place to relax and facilities at the hostel are good with a kitchen/dining area and comfortable, well-furnished dorms. There is also a spa - great for soothing aching muscles after a hard day on the slopes/tracks! The hotel also has a restaurant if you feel like a treat. Another option for accommodation is the self-contained chalets located at the entrance to the hotel. If you are travelling as part of a small group, it may be just as economical to stay in one of these and have access to your own kitchen, bathroom, and TV. During quieter periods, the staff may be happy to negotiate a good deal for this (ask!).
The downside, as with all small villages in NZ, is that the public transport links are practically non-existent so this hostel is probably best suited to travellers with their own transport. Ask around in nearby towns though, as there may be some kind of shuttle operating.
Top tip - get up early to watch the sunrise over the volcanoes from the hotel grounds. This is a view not to be missed, and in case you didn't know - one of them was used as 'Mount Doom' in the Lord of The Rings movies!

This place has cute ski lodge rooms. It's small but cozy. The facilities are okay. There are not enough showers or toilets. It has a nice restaurant and bar but it's probably a bit expensive for backpackers. — Clare (2005-01-16)
