Although it doesn't look like much from the outside, this is perhaps one of the best-equipped hostels in New Zealand. Recently refurbished, it has fantastic facilities and everything is spotlessly clean, with bright decor and friendly staff. The dorms are extremely spacious and even have a small writing desk as well as plenty of space to store your gear.
The communal facilities include two large kitchens which have every type utenstil, pot or appliance you can think of. There are also cooking and washing up stations that are low enough for easy use by wheelchair users. There is plenty of storage space for food for self-caterers, with several large fridges and a freezer as well. There are two large, smart dining areas and several lounge areas / TV rooms.
On the top-floor is the laundry with a great view of the harbour and city, as well as a TV so you won't get bored waiting for the machines to finish. The hostel cat also lives up here! There are several internet stations located throughout the hostel, as well as plenty of payphones that also accept incoming calls. There is a travel shop next to reception that offers great deals on local attractions as well as onward travel. The reception area also has a small shop selling a few essentials and food items.
As for location, YHA Wellington is situated in the heart of the city, just around the corner from Courtenay Place. There is a large supermarket across the road and nearby attractions include the national 'Te Papa' museum and the Embassy Cinema, where the World Premiere of Lord of The Rings 3 was shown in 2003. Courtenay Place is home to numerous cafes, restaurants and bars as well as a large cinema complex. Access to the hostel is easy - from the Ferry Terminals, Bus or Train Stations, catch any local bus heading to Courtenay Place, otherwise it's a 20-30 minute walk. From the Aiport, catch the 'Flyer' bus; this also stops at Courtenay Place. From there, head towards the Embassy Cinema and at the cross-roads turn left. The YHA is located just ahead on the left-hand corner.
