The Thredbo AYH hostel, nestled Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains, has excellent accommodations. Unlike some urban Australian hostels, the kitchen and dining areas are well-outfitted and well-kept. Dormitory and private rooms are simple and functional. Laundry facilities are available. But probably the best things about the hostel are its common room and the wonderful balcony view of the ski resort at Thredbo.
During the Australian summer (Dec-Feb), travel to this part of Kosciuszko National Park is more limited than during the winter ski season (Jun-Aug), but this is a great area to visit any time of year. Keep in mind, however, that the hostel is so popular during ski season that you will need more than just a reservation to stay here; you'll also need a little luck, as the Thredbo hostel holds a lottery for beds during the peak season. If you travel by car, parking may also be an issue as the hostel does not have parking of its own. But no worries, mate: there are public parking lots within a 5-minute walk from the hostel.
The Snowy Mountains are Australia's prime skiing destination! Although the country has been experiencing recent drought, the area usually averages more annual snowfall than the Alps. Check out the bobsled run at the edge of town! The area is also starting to gain more popularity in the off-season, with summer activities like mountain biking, hiking, and the ever-present bobsled run! The hike up to the summit of Mt. Kosciuszko is a favorite amongst visitors, but there are other lesser-known trails from trailheads near Dead Horse Gap. The gap itself is a nice place to catch a summer sunset, too.
All in all, this hostel is a decent value in the quiet off-season, and if you're lucky enough to get a lottery bed during ski season, it's the best value around!
