The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Sydney - Sydney Central YHA Hostel is very well located and has lots of activities/meals organized every day. Check-in at 2 p.m. and checkout at 10 a.m. -- be careful because the swipe card is programmed to give access to the room just until 10 a.m.!
The Location
The hostel is perfectly located, only fifty metres to Central Station. If you arrive at Sydney's airport, just take the train (airport link) and that's it! Also, enjoy the city by taking the free city shuttle (there's a bus stop only a few metres from the hostel). It's a short walk to Darling Harbour and Chinatown. Walk a bit more and you'll find yourself standing in front of the Opera House!
Rooms and Bathrooms
Bathrooms aren't as tidy as one would expect from a YHA hostel. There aren't many showers available (bear in mind this hostel has five hundred and fifty-six beds), and even though they have liquid soap, there are no paper towels, just a dryer that sometimes does not function.
Rooms have bunk beds -- and they are the noisiest beds ever! This means you'll probably wake up every time one of your roommates goes to bed or gets up. There are lockers big enough to put the whole bag in them (remember to take your own padlock). Another positive thing is that each bed has its own reading light.
Common Spaces
Common spaces are distributed throughout many of the nine floors. For example, on the first floor there are two kitchens (there are no ovens, so it is impossible to cook, say, a pizza), a big dinning room, a pool table, lots of computers with internet access (for a small fee),and a cinema! This cinema has surround sound and free movies are shown daily including free popcorn. On the ground floor is the twenty-four-hour reception as well as the office of YHA TRAVEL that offers thousand of travel packages for every region within the country, cheap flights, and some deals for Asia or New Zealand. On the rooftop there is also a pool, sauna, and BBQ.
Internet -- global gossip card -- is charged at the hostel, but there is a place on the corner of the street which is cheaper, and there are even three travel agencies around the corner that offer thirty minutes' free internet access for backpackers.
Summary
This is a good place to start your trip in Sydney -- it's easy to get to/from the airport and has lots of activities. Plan your future tours with the YHA TRAVEL agency and have a G'day!

Overpriced I found this place really overpriced compared to a lot of other hostels i have been in with the same amount of facilities. It is not the cleanest i have seen but a ok hostel. — Margit , norway (2009-04-26)

It is the sheraton of the hostels! well i do have a yha membership card and i want to use it as much as possible. i didn't expect a lot but i should! This hostel is damn clean, i got a 4 bed dorm which was lovely and light room! They got a rooftop terrace where a pool is too. Even a sauna! This hostel is good, the staff is ok so i can recommend it to anyone! of course it is a bit expensive but you get a lot for it! — HermantheGerman , German (2007-06-12)

Excellent place! Fantastic facilities, everthing is clean and neat and tidy. It's a bit expensive, but it's definitely worth it. Nothing more to say! — Francis (2006-12-19)

Expensive it might be, but it's well worth it. Staff were great, facilities exceptional. Definitely one of the best hostels we stayed in, during our travels. — K (2005-12-19)

This is a great hostel! Yes, it's expensive but its location certainly makes up for this. The bus stop and train station is right across the road and it's about a 20-minute walk down the harbor. During my stay the bathrooms and kitchens were really clean, even though the hostel was full! I met loads of people here and I recommended it throughout my travels around Australia. — Anonymous (2005-10-10)

This place is excellent. Clean and sparkly, safe, really friendly staff. It's got everything you could want from a hostel. I stayed for two weeks and could have happily stayed for two months. — Joanne (2005-07-20)

Fabulous. I made some great mates here. It's clean and the staff are friendly. You feel safe staying there. There are activities planned for every day if you want to meet new people. I could quite happily have stayed there forever. — Joanne (2005-06-16)

This is a fantastic hostel, well worth paying that little bit extra for. It's clean, has friendly staff and excellent facilities. It's in a perfect location, five minutes from CBD [Central Business district] and two minutes from the Central Railway Station. Scubar is great, if not a bit crowded on a Monday night (crab racing). There are a lot of old people there, and the size of the place can make it a bit difficult to meet people, but all in all, it's very friendly. Rooms are of a good size (not ten beds in a four-bed room). I highly recommend it. Don't get too excited when you read about the pool! — Will (2005-01-31)

Very nice hostel. It's a bit expensive, hence only 4 stars (you get what you pay for — not *more* than what you pay for). I would absolutely recommend this place. It's within reach of the airport, too, and the city center is within walking distance (it's a 10 to 20-minute walk from the hostel to most of the attractions). — Mr. T. (2005-01-07)

This hostel was overwhelming! The kitchens were fantastic because they were fully furnished with pots and pans and all you could imagine. The lounge area was great for us to sit down in peace. Each level had its own TV room and that was good because we could watch our favorite TV programs. The toilet facilities were keep well-cleaned and comfortable to use. The pool was well maintained and the sauna was, too. The view from the top while sitting in the pool was lovely. So overall we had a lovely stay there and the staff were very helpful. Many thanks to them and the cleaners! — Ashleigh (2005-01-03)

Yes it's big but it's a great hostel. It's very clean and equipped with everything you need. The rooms are spacious and the bathrooms spotless. It has excellent security and it's in a perfect location to explore Sydney from. It's one of the best hostels in Oz. — Monkey (2004-12-30)

Perfect location, perfect staff, perfect rooms. Breakfast is not included; I understand they have a lot of rooms, but for that price I think it should be included. — Max (2004-08-29)

Clean, cozy, great location, and seems overrun with old people staying there--fifty plus, you know! Going up to the roof for a ciggie was nice, but when they boast a "swimming pool" they really mean a big bath. But I really enjoyed my stay here. The staff were great, too. Ahhhh, YHA, you've done it again. — The Dave (2004-07-22)

I've been here more than a couple of times. Single, twin, or dorms are all of good size. The kitchen and dining areas are very good as well. — MARTEE_BEE (2004-07-21)

The perfect place to stay. Everything is very clean. It has a fantastic kitchen and dining area, and free movies and popcorn in the dvd-lounge. The view from the rooftop is great and it's central to everthing. — Steph (2004-07-19)
