The Hostelz.com Review
The Sundancer is a really colourful hostel with a nice open-plan living area on the first floor---pool tables, Internet cafe, fireplace, ping pong tables, kitchen, and reception are all connected. They provide a lot of nice extra services so you don't have to leave the hostel if you don't want to. These include a residents-only bar at the reception, a heated spa (hot tub to North Americans) out back, phone boxes in the alley outside, and cheap bike hire. The downstairs is decorated with a lot of funky, interesting murals and the rooms and upstairs areas have sky-high ceilings and funky old wooden floors, throw carpets, and stained-glass windows.

The location is also good. It's right in central Fremantle, just blocks from the main attractions and the supermarket. You can get there from the airport by taking two busses, or a bus to Perth and then the train, but the easiest way is probably just to get the airport shuttle bus, which will drop you right outside. Getting into and back from Perth is easiest by train; turn left outside the hostel, go up to the corner, turn left again and follow the road to the end to find the Fremantle Train Station.

Downsides to the hostel include a lack of cleanliness. The reception, the hallways, and sometimes the rooms have a musty, funky unappealing sort of smell. Some of the floors and bathrooms seem like they could use a thorough scrubbing, and the throw carpets in the rooms need a vacuum.

For the kitchen you are given a set of cutlery, a plate, a bowl and a cup when you arrive and these are yours for the duration of your stay; if you forget and leave them out in the kitchen after washing you're responsible for them, so watch out.

The social atmosphere here is pretty good, but could use a few more planned activities in the area instead of just relying on the bar to provide entertainment. The television room is small and cramped and rarely used.

1 Avoid this hellhole!
We stayed here the week before Christmas and it was the worst week of my life. The hostel would be so much better if the long term residents left and the staff had more control over the noise! I had to wear earplugs every night to help the noise go away, which helped, except when they fell out! I was very pleased to leave this dive and I would rather sleep on the street than stay another night there!

1 Nightmare!
On a positive note, there is free internet access although it is quite slow, the staff seemed very friendly, and the location was pretty good. On a negative note, it was the most dirty, disgusting hostel I've ever stayed in. I felt itchy just being in the building. The first night I stayed there my dorm was raided by the police at 1 a.m. -- some drunk guy staying in my room gave them a false name when arrested. When I came in at 11:30 on the second night there were hoards of people running around shouting and screaming like they were in kindergarten! When I went to have a shower the next morning, one of them stunk of piss and the other had the shower head ripped off the wall! My pillow was yellow as was the duvet they gave me which had no cover! All the people in my room appeared to be long termers, which meant they had totally taken over the whole room so I had nowhere to put my stuff and I had to move things around to make space. If you have no standards of cleanliness and hygiene and don't mind living in a hole then this is the place for you!

3 Not in a hurry to go back
Fine as long as you can spend your entire stay drunk. The place is loud all the time, don't know how people hold down jobs while living there full time. Facilities were what you would expect in a hostel, basic but fine. The pool is a big bonus. Long term residents are very territorial, not easy to get on with at all; even my fellow Irish were pretty ignorant I'm sorry to say. The hostel is fine, the people make it uncomfortable. Staff are really good though.

1 Awful
I relied on information given on this page when making the reservation for this hostel. Bar downstairs is ok if you're into drinking every night, the rest was just shocking -- two out of eight showers worked, toilets didn't have locks and stank, floor and cupboard space in dorms were 90% covered with crap of the long-term residents, and it looked like the rooms hadn't been vacuumed since 2004. I didn't dare to eat here afraid that I might catch a disease from the kitchen. They played music 'til 1:30 a.m. and started watching footy on TV after that shouting and yelling all the time. The only thing that was missing was bedbugs, maybe I just got lucky. Think twice before booking in this hostel, there are far better places in Freo!

1 Oh my god, shocking
The sundancer was a in a nice location and the size of the hostel is pretty good. One problem. The long term people who have more or less turned into the hostels cockroaches! The hostel needs a good clear out of hanger-on's and start fresh! The management need to take control, but have no people skills or thinking skills to act! The long term people need to leave as most of them have been there over a year and if that's their idea of traveling oz then god help me! They also make you feel very unwelcome and if you're not in with the crowd. Travelers, avoid this hell on earth!

2 Sorry
i do not like to give bad comments, but this was the only hostel i was glad to leave. the staff is extremely friendly! Maybe i had bad luck or was too tired, but the room was untidy, the roommates i met unfriendly, the couple under me very friendly to each other during nighttime, the showers next door out of order. It looks nice and it seems to be a kind of party hostel, so i guess that people could like it. To be fair, i only stayed one night and had no chance to visit the kitchen, the bar, and the other facilities.

5 It deserves more than five stars
I think its safe to say that sundancer is in fact the best hostel in australia, no scrub that, the world! you are instantly made to feel welcome by whoever is behind the bar, Jay with his complete coolness! julia who you can easily sit and have a chat with and rob. the rooms are clean although in a ten-bed such as the wicked room 13, it will get rather untidy, but that is all part of the charm and lets face it, we are travelers -- who wants to be tidy? The TV room with the beanbags is a genius idea, with a lot of videos to choose from ideal for calming the hangover after an awesome night on the goon at the bar! and then there is the bar with the wide screen telly, pool table, playstation, and the couches, ideal to crash on after a session on the goon and or beer, but not with your shoes on or the practical jokers will be unleashed and you will get drawn on! and how could i forget, the swimming pool, which is great to be lazing around drink in hand soaking up the sun (well when it's sunny) and last but by no means least, this hostel comes highly recommended, whether you are there for one night or three months, you are instantly made to feel like part of the crew! i know my friends and i are heading back as soon as we can! see you there!

1 Very disgusting. I stayed there just some days ago. Smelly, dirty kitchen. Dirty bathrooms. My room was on the second floor -- there were renovating works at the bathrooms. Tools, leathers, and brooms everywhere. I had to find a bathroom on the first floor for brushing teeth or having a toilet. It's a huge building -- and I had to walk miles for brushing my teeth, which could be hard, when you come back tired after a great long night and just wanna sleep. The Videos are not working really and I haven't seen any dvds. Most of the staff is friendly -- only the night guard was yelling on us just for standing and the front door for having a chat and didn't enter quickly. It's not allowed to sit outside after 10:30 -- that sucks.

I have left the crazy place with fond memories, a handfull of mental friends and a beer gut! Cheapest drinks in town i might add! You couldnt go wrong!

3 i originally came to australia to stay at my uncles but thought it would be better if me and my mate went backpacking. we ended up at sundancers, the place is a laugh. the people are really friendly. i had a blast but the down side is that it's dirty. the room was infested with bedbugs and the tv room had mice. but at the end of the day what do you expect it's a hostel! but i had a wicked time -- wish i never came home to england. one day i'll go back.

1 Bed bugs, dirty room, no window in room, and a very noisy staircase. Staff are very friendly and helpful though.
