The Hostelz.com Review
Hanse-Hostel Rostock is a wonderful option for travelers who want to explore the German Baltic coast beaches and the Hanseatic League cities at a low cost, since the location of the city of Rostock is very central and convenient for one day sightseeing eastward or westward bound. Besides, Rostock itself is an interesting city, within easy reach of the best German beaches.

The hostel is pretty small, with a few bunk bed rooms and more single- or double-bed rooms. Reservations are usually needed, since groups are frequent and there is the risk that you cannot find accommodation or availability for just one night.

Getting to the Hanse-Hostel Rostock is not so easy -- it is located on the opposite side of town, when you arrive by railroad. Nevertheless, a thirty-minute walk is possible or else you can take the streetcar that drops you right in front. If you travel by car, there is plenty of room for parking and the hostel is just a few blocks from the city entrance.

The reception team is very efficient and English speaking (not so easy to find in Germany). The owners live in the house and are always ready to help you around and provide full information about town, bars and beaches, train schedules, and any other tourist information. The hostel also has free internet facilities (one desktop computer). There is no curfew and no lockout.

Though not very spacious, showers are convenient (twenty-four-hour hot) and located apart from the WCs. The hostel has an unusually big kitchen with a large dining room and all appliances (microwave, stove, fridge). This is the highlight of this hostel. It is so easy to cook and prepare meals any time of the day. There is also a nice external area with tables and benches -- ideal for beer drinking or sunbathing -- and kid toys.

The hostel is very quiet and good for a relaxing night of sleep. It is not a party hostel, but there are games that can be useful for relaxing and meeting people. Smoking is only allowed in designated areas, so the smoke-free rooms are really special.

5  I came to Rostock on October 22 to watch football, and I had seen a flyer about the Hanse-Hostel. It had just opened, two weeks earlier I think, even though they wanted to open earlier but had problems with the city council. They were still preparing some more rooms but had no problems fitting us in at that time. I had a very nice stay there. The staff were very friendly and talkative. In the evening we sat in the kitchen and talked, while we also watched TV. They were also very helpful if I had problems that needed to be solved. This hostel really recommendable, and I will use it also in the future for my football trips. So despite opening later than planned it's now fully finished and well functioning.  ()
5  When I visited this hostel last week it was open! I spent one night in the hostel, which was great. I've never had such a good bed in another hostel. The "hostel parents" were extremely generous and I can just give you the tip to stay at this hostel while you visit Rostock! Everything is fine and very new! Thanks a lot again for making my visit so comfortable!  ()
1  I tried to visit this hostel on September 2, 2004, but it was still under construction. I wonder if it even exists anymore. Fortunately, there are other nice hostels in the city, even though they are harder to find on the Internet.  ()
1  We visited this hostel on April 7, 2004. It was under construction at the time, but no one told us that. We wasted a lot of time because of this, and didn't like being fooled like this. We strongly recommend that you add the date that construction on the hostel will be completed to this site.  ()
