The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Maroochydore YHA Backpackers Hostel is small and cosy. There are many long-stayers in the hostel. It is very lively at night where backpackers hang out and chat with one another.
The Location
It is so difficult to find! The hostel is tucked in a whole neighbourhood. You wouldn't know it was a hostel unless you intentionally walk in. The neighbourhood is pretty alright, though. There are convenience stores within walking distance. They have a courtesy bus that takes you to places like Australia Zoo and Eumundi Markets (on Saturday).
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are quite clean. But the comforters on the queen-size bed have bedbugs on them. The bunk bed structure are made of wood and metal. If you're unlucky, the beds creak with every move you make on the bed. Bed linens are provided and should be returned upon checkout. The beds are quite comfortable. There are no lockers in the family room of six.
The bathrooms are alright. The bathroom lights, heater, and shower all have a timer, though! So you have to constantly go and restart the timer to prevent the toilet from going completely dark. The heater, however, will take a while to come back on (while you are freezing with shampoo in your eye), so do bathe fast!
Common Spaces
The kitchen area can be pretty dirty and messy after dinner. People just don't wash up sometimes. The pots, pans, and frying spatulas in the kitchen are really "well-used" -- you'll find melted spatulas, pans that are scratched bare. Try not to cook there. The stoves can't be lit without a lighter. The fridge are so smelly, and pigeon holes are always fully occupied. They charge a deposit for each key and a separate deposit for a box of cutlery, plates, and cups.
The common area has a pool table, sitting area, TV, and vending machine. The internet room (with two computers) is one of the smelliest ones I've been to so far! It has the smell of stinky feet! And people walk in and out past you all the time to get back to their rooms. But it is a social hostel where you're likely to meet other friendly backpackers -- a fun party hostel.
Summary
They provide free breakfast daily, free Surf bus to all the main beaches, free kayaks and fishing rods! It's a good deal for the price you pay to stay there.

The double rooms were tiny and the mosquito screen had a number of holes. However, the kitchen was a decent size and well equipped, and the bathrooms were reasonably clean. The winning factor for me was the hostel's proximity to The Australia Zoo and Steve Irwin's crocodile show. It was wicked! — Melissa (2005-03-06)

This place has an excellent location. The Sunshine Coast rocks!!! — Anonymous (2005-01-02)
Having recently visited this hostel I was bitterly disappointed. Having read all the rave reviews it received I was shocked when shown to my room to discover it was nothing more than what I would compare as a prison cell. The room was a double room, and with the bed in there it left less than a foot to move around. The bed sheets were stained and the smoke alarm in the "room" didn't appear to be working. The mosquito screen was literally falling off the door and there was a two inch gap between the door and the floor, and geckos and other creepy crawlies were freely able to gain access. So arachnophobics do not go here. Dead cockroaches are visible throughout the hostel, none in the rooms though. The pool is small and nice I have to admit, and the courtesy bus is a definite advantage. The manager of the hostel is probably one of the nicest people I've ever met as he would bend over backwards to help you in any way he could. Unfortunately in my opinion the 'rooms' in this hostel are severely below standard and the worst I've ever stayed in. — Anonymous (2003-11-15)
