Backpack City & Surf

Description

The Hostelz.com Review

Backpack City & Surf is a small hostel located just on the edge of the Perth’s central Northbridge area, where there are many bars and restaurants. There aren’t many rooms, which gives it a very homey feel, and if you stay a few days you will likely get to know most people staying. Wi-Fi is present throughout the building and there is free tea and coffee available in the very well-equipped kitchen

The Location

The best and cheapest way to reach the hostel is by using Perth’s free Central Area Transit (CAT) buses. From the central train station, get on the blue CAT bus and get off at stop six. Walk slightly back the way you came, until you get to the large crossroad you just passed, and turn left. You will soon see another cross next to a large park (Victoria Park). Turn left here, onto Newcastle Street, and walk for a minute until you see Money Street on your right. Go up here and you will see the hostel on your left after about a hundred meters.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorms are reasonably spacious and clean, but there is no AC (instead, just large, noisy ceiling fans). If you stay here, try and get a top bunk, as the air circulating barely reaches the lower bunks. Security is a slight issue. There are lockers in the dorms but at the time of writing, there are no keys available. Locks on the rooms are provided, but these are regularly left wide open due to the hostel's small and homey vibe. Bathrooms are clean and the showers are lovely. There are only three showers for each gender, but waiting is never an issue

Common Spaces

The hostel's common spaces lack atmosphere and are regularly empty. However, when guests are present, you will always see people chatting or playing cards. There are two long tables just outside the rooms, where people mostly sit to surf the web due to the need to keep quiet. If you do want to have a small party or talk late into the night, the kitchen also has tables where you can do this. The kitchen has everything you will need to cook, including a full range of utensils, and it is often vacant. There are also two large fridges for your food and booze.

Summary

Although this is a small and quiet hostel, this place can be extremely friendly and welcoming. If you are staying in Perth for long periods whilst you work, this place will be the perfect mix between a sociable hostel and a quiet home where you can chill out. Perth’s city center is just a short walk away and the free CAT city bus runs nearby. There is also a supermarket just around the corner.

Welcome to Sh*tty and Surf. We have indoor waterfalls when it's raining (bring your raincoats if you want to sit around indoors), a thick, clear scum that coats the bathrooms, and a complete lack of any staff. Handy hint -- if you want to stay for free, just come in after 6 and crash on the couch. No one will care. Smoke inside if you want. Help yourself to the free tea or coffee (but please mind the bugs) and please don't feed the rats that live under our fridge. They may seem cute and cuddly, but remember they are wild animals and deserve to be left alone. Please, no pets (the rats just hate the competition and we've had some cats go missing recently). If you love to wake up every morning to find your food missing, and just want to meet some really, really strange, non-backpacking people, this place is for you. Twelve stars all the way.

This place is good, clean and welcoming to backpackers with all the freebies. It doesn't pretend to be something it is not. It's close to everything, and it's a good value. We enjoyed our stay. Good luck to the new management.
