The Hostelz.com Review
Bellingen is one of the most alternative towns along Australia's east coast, and the Bellingen YHA Backpackers is no exception. While the hostel offers standard dorm rooms, doubles and singles, it has a unique set of open-concept rooms that overlook a scenic forested area. Difficult to describe, these rooms are similar to a veranda and they overlook the Bellingen River. Privacy can be maintained however, by pulling the sheet/curtain across the open-faced side. (Do you know what an aircraft hangar looks like?)

In addition to these unique rooms, the walls inside the hostel are covered top to bottom with artistic photographs of what I would describe as "tastefully naked people" (apparently taken at the local nude beach). You may also buy fresh eggs from the resident chickens ($0.30 each on an honours policy), and to top it off, as with most alternative accommodations, dogs seem to wander around the premises.

Conveniently located just off of the main street, the hostel is close to grocery stores, bottle shops, pubs, and cafes. As previously described, the rooms are conceptually unique and are otherwise clean. The hostel has a TV lounge, a small kitchen and two funky outdoor patio areas - one with a pool table. The main drawback is the limited number of toilets and showers for the number of guests staying there. While I am not sure what the maximum capacity is (likely 30-40 people), everyone shares the same two toilets and two showers.

The guests are a mixed bag between working travellers, hippie-types, and people travelling the Oz Experience bus. Day-trips are offered to the nude beach and for rainforest walks. All and all, a very friendly chilled-out hostel.

Perfect
Great hostel. Lovely people, great town, fantastic location, good facilities. I couldn't think of any improvements. I'm currently planning my next holiday there.

great -- the real australia, the people from Oz experience were a real pain though, but then they were dragging suitcases so they couldnt really say they were backpackers could they? always complaining and wanting to be entertained, still the rest of us all had a good time. dont be fooled, this place is great. a piece of little australia. went to the rainforest, saw some platypus. just a cute little critter that swims in the river. went with some german and dutch girls to this nude beach. whoa, me the only guy -- whoa, total boner. so embarrassing. drank beer in an ozzie pub with aforementioned backpackers.

I worked for accommodation at this hostel for two months and it was probably the best two months of my life. I went travelling for nine months and this was the best place I went. I love it. Don't leave without doing the rope swing!

Bellingen is really boring. There is nothing to do whatsoever. I only stayed here one night because we had to with Oz Experience. The fluffy chickens are really cute, though. The accommodation is ok.

I loved it here. Friendly staff, beautiful surroundings, very mellow, chilled out atmosphere. I only meant to stay a couple of days, and ended up there three weeks. It loses a star, as I would have liked it to have more hammocks. Other than that, a lovely place!

This is one of the worst hostels I stayed at in Australia. I came here on a stop with the Oz Experience bus, if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have stopped, that's for sure. There's not much going on in this town. We did do a nice night canoeing trip that was organized at the hostel. As for the accommodation, a group of us ended up getting put in another facility because there was no more room in the main building. We ended up finding out that we were sleeping above the bar across the street. Not a fun experience. I complained to the staff about the fact that we were unhappy with the accommodation and that we were paying the same as people in the main building. They didn't care, and I was not too impressed. Good luck!

Don't pass this hostel by! The staff are amazing, the hostel beautiful, and the surroundings amazingly peaceful. I don't like small towns and I could have spent months there. From fluffy chickens to the nudie wall, you have to check it out!

If there is one hostel to visit on the East Coast of Australia, this is it.

This is one of the loveliest places I've ever been.
