The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Blue Mountains Katoomba - Blue Mountains YHA Hostel feels very cosy and warm, with really nice and friendly reception staff. We love the hostel, but not the biting cold in Blue Mountains!

The Location

It is easy to find and very accessible! You can see a big sign "YHA" when you're nearing the hostel -- it's just a five-minute walk downhill along the main street from Katoomba Train Station. It'll take about two hours from Sydney Central Station to get to Katoomba Station.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms are very clean. They have four-, six-, or eight-share dorms available. They also have double bedroom (includes a double bed with a single bunk bed above) with/without private bathroom. The dorm rooms are equipped with heaters, coat hangers, towel hangers, and lockers! It's one of the more well-equipped dorm rooms we've stayed in so far. The bunk beds are metal framed and nice thick comforters are provided to keep you warm. Bed linens are provided, and are to be returned upon check-out.

The bathrooms are very clean and nice. They also have a heater in the bathroom so that you don't freeze. There are three shower rooms are all equipped with a soap dish and changing area with benches -- hot and cold water taps provided.

Common Spaces

There are two fireplaces -- one in the common lounge and one in the reading room. It is a very laid-back homely hostel. You can just read a book and chill out by the fireplace. They will store your luggage storage for a fee. The kitchen is very neat and tidy. Recycling bins are available at the lounge area for the environment conscious. The common lounge has an area filled with bean bags, the fireplace area, kids corner, and a pool table. They also charge for internet and it is only open between 6 a.m. and 9 or 10 p.m. There are two pay phones in the hostel and even a help phone line when reception has closed.

Summary

Overall, it is a pleasant experience staying there. It is difficult to get things done via email -- things get done faster by phone over there. Your key card would be required to open the door to the building beyond a certain time to protect guests.

Loved it!
Katoomba as a town is not too nice, but the Blue Mountains are fantastic. If you want to stay close to them, this YHA is lovely. Great kitchen facilities, close to main street/supermarket, and only fifteen minutes to the three sisters and walking tracks. Clean, friendly with a lovely reading room. I enjoyed my stay!

Great Choice
This is a very nice hostel, and is probably the best deal in town. The staff are efficient and accessible. The hostel is well located on the main street. There's a supermarket about two minutes away. Security is pretty good -- electronic key entry to rooms, and there are lockers you can use if you bring a padlock. The only gripe about this place is that the Wi-Fi internet is charged out at excessive rates, which demonstrates a degree of contempt for guests, especially when so many backpacker hostels include it as standard nowadays. The 10 a.m. check-out is also a pain. If it wasn't for these issues I'd have awarded five stars.

Excellent! Fabulous! Amazing! This place is great! It's so spacious and the facilities are excellent. A fine mountain retreat with a comfy big lounge area -- perfect for reading a book after a day out walking. Kitchen is big and dining area is massive. The staff were really helpful and friendly too -- I had a telephone interview I needed to do whilst I was there, so they let me use their entire conference room for it! I even randomly bumped into someone I knew in the hostel from back home. it's true what they say -- you are likely to see someone you know whilst traveling around NZ or Oz, and see people you meet more than once as you travel around! If you go to the Blue Mountains be sure to stay here!

The best hostel in Australia! Clean, comfortable, well equipped. We considered going back to the Blue Mountains just to stay here again. Comfy sofas too!

Excellent hostel. This large and well-appointed hostel is in a good location in the town centre, within easy walking distance of the shops, railway station etc. The building itself is old and a rambling, but has been well decorated inside and was spotlessly clean on my visit. There is a large and well-equipped kitchen (cleaned by staff daily) with ample fridge space, and a large lounge type area with sofas etc for relaxing in the evenings. The bathrooms were clean, of a good size and we seemed to have them to ourselves (although this was off-peak season). The upper floors at the rear of the building have good views over the mountains. The Blue Mountains area is probably best explored with your own car, as there are limited public transport options if you want to get very far out of town to do some of the trails, and the hostel has free off-street parking. This was the first YHA I stayed at in Australia was was a very good introduction. Thoroughly reccomended if you are visiting the Blue Mountains area.

The communal areas here are awesome. The whole interior is renovated art deco style, with lots of nice little touches. The kitchen is very well equipped and everywhere is spotless. The double room was big and clean if a little soulless considering the rest of the place. The atmosphere is relaxed, and they have talks, films and other activities organized throughout the week. Don't miss it.

This is my favorite hostel anywhere in the world. It's in a beautiful old art deco building and even though it is kind of big it still feels very cozy and welcoming. The staff were the friendliest and most helpful I found anywhere, and I changed my travel plans just so I could go back for a few more days. Katoomba is a great place to stay as a side trip from Sydney to escape the noise and hustle for a while. I'm already planning my next trip to Oz and this place is at the top of the list.

Great place! It's really clean, with an awesome, giant kitchen and a beautiful commons/eating area. It's very cozy, with lots of character and a friendly staff. They've got a "free shelf" in one of the giant refrigerators for people to leave stuff that's still good but that they can't take with them (like milk and butter), which is a system I wish more hostels employed. This is a great location, too. It's just a bit down the main street of town, from all the shops and such.
