Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
Depression the place was a complete joke. i stayed in the guest house, which was $115 per week and you would not put a dog in it. no air con in rooms, only a cheap kmart pedestal fan -- with temperatures forty-plus outside it was unbearable. and filthy rooms cleaned once a week, also a TV room with only three channels. the manager although she did get me some reasonable work for only a short period was a complete alco and would take some of her personal problems out on her customers. her partner kaz was the same -- also she had her favourites who she sucked up to. so to sum up this place i would call it a complete wreck of a place! do not go here unless you want to become an alcoholic which lynn would make you become and rip you off. — ciarian , ireland (2009-11-14)

Insane asylum Lynn and kaz drove me insane, totally up themselves, I had a mad time but lynn would bring her alcoholic problems to the hostel. if you want to party go to this place but beware of the mega bitches lynn and kaz. the place would also be filthy at times. — metal , metal (2009-09-05)

Absolutely bloody fantastic! I absolutely loved this place and had the best time ever there. Kaz and Lynn were fantastic -- really kind and friendly. So what if the place is a little grotty -- you're backpacking for God's sake and surely it's the people that make it and not the surroundings! A bit of dirt never hurt anybody. If you go there and find there isn't enough work for everyone then you've not sussed out the season correctly. When I stayed, everyone had work and was earning really good money. Every evening, we'd all get together, share a few beers (even with Kaz and Lynn!) and had a really good chat about the days events. A true family atmosphere -- it was great on Friday nights too because there'd always be a bbq or pizza with about forty people all sat together around the tables -- a really great opportunity to get a bit dressed up (after being in fruit picking clothes all week), chat to fellow hostel mates and in general have a brilliant time. If you go backpacking to stay in pristine places, you might as well just stay at home with your parents. For me, it was all part of the experience and adventure and I think the Riviera was fantastic! So thank you Lynn and Kaz -- I had a brilliant time whilst staying with you guys -- it made my trip! — stacey , english (2009-06-10)

Needs considerable Restoration. The only reason i'm giving this hostel three stars is because of its atmosphere which at times could be quite extreme! The hostel with out a doubt is in need of work and to be honest was not fit for people to live in. I'm not going to go into details about Lynn because I really got on well with her but at times I felt she brought problems from her personal life to work which would then be taken out on her customers -- us. It's quite frustrating not been able to do anything about it (give her a bad reputation) because there's always a fresh batch of skint backpackers around the corner! I would advise you to go to this hostel but only when there is work! It might sound obvious but there were people turning up when there was nothing in season, so make sure you do your research on the area. Because she ain't gonna tell ya! And don't take any sh*t! — Sam , England (2009-06-06)
They don't have enough work for the number of people staying in their hostel, no matter what they say.
The Riviera in a nutshell:
Unclean
Bitchy managers
Old and moldy
Air con doesn't work
Too many people in one tiny room
Never stay here. Never EVER stay here. Oh my god. Yuck! — Blaney (2006-02-13)
Their "Guest House" was disgusting. It was supposed to be cleaned every week but it needed to be done more like every day. When we stayed there it was not even fit for people to be staying in. There were two toilets and two showers for 15-20 people and they were constantly filthy. The window in our bedroom was broken and a week later when we left it was still broken. The kitchen had one dirty stove for all of us to cook on and we had COCKROACHES in our room and on our BED!!! — D & B (2005-09-03)

This was the absolute best hostel in Australia without a doubt. At first we booked to stay for three weeks than ended up staying for three months. With only four people to each room plus en suite bathrooms, TVs and bar fridges, we wish we came earlier, but the luxury didn't stop there. There was six days of work a week; everyone worked for the same company but in different locations. Everyone was on an hourly rate. The two of us were bringing home around $730 each, clear, which is about $1400 AUS. After work we all went back to the hostel sat around the bonfire talking and drinking. They were the quiet stay-at-home nights. What an excellent atmosphere.
The managers were very nice and easy to get along with. They also got on the piss with us a couple of times, especially Kaz. (piss head!!) Highly recommended for atmosphere, money, fun and also a homey feel to it as well. We only left because our visa expired or we would still be there. Cheers!! — Chris & Bec (2005-07-03)

We arrived in the hostel after being picked up by Kaz, one of the managers. Straight away we sat down to a gourmet barbecue dinner with approx. 45 other people. While the managers were running around organizing everything I had the opportunity to get to know a few people and ask their thoughts about the hostel. Everyone loved the two girls' hospitality, especially Lynn's. She had the name Ms. Mum, as she was always mothering her backpackers by taking them to the doctors, and collecting and posting their mail. She also went to the effort of organizing cakes on people's birthdays.
I've stayed in a lot of hostels around the world, not just Australia, and I was pretty happy with the room size per four people, as I have seen rooms this size cater to six people.
I will say our shower curtain had a little mould on it but when I brought this to their attention I was given a new one straight away. The rooms were cleaned every week without fail by two cleaning ladies in their aprons.
Kaz and Lynn don't change a thing. This definitely is a home away from home. — Shane and Ash (2005-06-16)
The absolute WORST hostel I have EVER stayed in. The rooms were supposed to be cleaned every week, but they weren't. The air-conditioning didn't work, the building was worn down and falling apart and there was an insect infestation in the kitchen that was NEVER addressed.
They told us: "We are a two story hostel with twelve rooms. Most of these rooms have four beds, and all have air-conditioners, fridges and are en suite." However, they forgot to mention how small the rooms were for four people, and that the bathrooms were MOLDY. They always use the same rag to wipe the toilet, sink, kitchen counter, etc. YUCK!
They also said: "We are very close to the river and only walking distance from the city center, theatres and pubs. We have lots of fun at our hostel to make sure you are happy." They try to "suck up" to you. It is so pathetic and fake. They don't want you to be happy, they just want you to tell other backpackers to stay there.
They also said: "We like to go sightseeing and we go skiing every weekend, plus we have barbecues." BULLCRAP!!! We never went sightseeing or skiing!!!
They said, too: "Mildura is a beautiful place to visit and we will try and get you work and make it your ‘home away from home.'" Yes, Mildura is beautiful but they were not able to find adequate amounts of work for the number of people staying at the hostel. It was DEFINITELY NOT a "home away from home."
The price of $130 per week plus $6 per day for work transportation was RIDICULOUS and not worth it. I barely made enough money to pay rent, let alone visit a local pub or buy groceries!!! The managers, Lyn and Karen, were bitchy and immature for their age. They are unprofessional and unwelcoming. Please, if you are reading this, never stay at the Riviera. — J and M (2005-05-01)
Ecch! I woke up to rodents!! I won't stay there again. — Anonymous (2005-02-16)

I only stayed the one night, but despite this Lyn and Karen were really kind and accommodating! The place isn't brilliant but the atmosphere is worth it! — Charlotte (2004-10-27)

Very friendly staff! — Anonymous (2004-07-19)
