5  I stayed here for 3 days/2 nights when I was on a visit to see Hadrian's Wall and the surrounding places, such as Vindolanda and Birdoswald. It provided an excellent place with easy distance from the main places, we were about 10/15 mins away from most places (on a mini bus), there also seemed to be a bus service that ran to several places so its easy to get around. It is just walking distance from Vindolanda, a very interesting place that has excavations going on each year. The hostel itself was a warm and friendly place, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The meals were very nice and there was an option for all including vegetarians. The communal living room also created a nice friendly atmosphere where people from all over the world can see each other and talk about the wonderful surrounding area, lending a very communal atmosphere. I definitely recommend it to anybody and will definitely stay there if I am to go again, or go and do some work experience.  ()
3  My friend and I stayed here last autumn. The location is gorgeous. The surroundings are really beautiful, and it really feels like you're in the country. The historic Roman sites of Vindolanda, Chesters, Houseteads and other smaller sites are close by, as are sections of Hadrian's wall. The visitor center is next door. In the high season, bus AD122 runs, connecting all of the Roman historic sites, and also offering a direct link to Newcastle, Carlisle and Hexham. The very nice Twice Brewed Inn, a few minutes walk along the road, does wonderful food. The hostel itself has a lovely big spacious lounge, with big comfortable chairs, a games area and a spacious dining room. Meals are offered. We had breakfast — it was okay, but not great. The dorm room was spacious, but it lost a star as I found the beds really uncomfortable. Despite the mattress it was like sleeping on a wooden board without one. My friend didn't mind that and she found it comfortable enough. I found the showers hot with good water pressure. My friend complained her shower was cold. The story of once and twice brewed is interesting. When soldiers visited the inn, hundreds of years ago, they found the ale so weak they demanded it be brewed again. However, when Lady Trevelyan, a teetotaler, opened the youth hostel in 1936 she said she wanted nothing brewed but tea, and only once.  ()
4  I stayed here with a friend in October 2004. It is in a beautiful location, with limited public transport connections (bus AD122 from Hexham, Carlisle and Newcastle stops right outside). The surrounding countryside is gorgeous. The hostel is bright with a huge comfortable lounge, bright dining room, self-catering kitchen and small dorms. We were in a four-bed dorm. My main complaint was that the beds were very uncomfortable. It took ages to find a comfortable position to get to sleep and I woke up feeling stiff. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. We had breakfast at the hostel — it was okay, not great. The evening meal choices are good for such a rural area — the hostel does a good selection, and the Twice Brewed Inn, a few minutes walk down the road, offers a well priced selection of lovely home cooked food. The hostel is close to the attractions of Hadrian's Wall, the Once Brewed visitor center is next door, and Vindolanda is a short walk away.  ()
