The Hostelz.com Review
Foley Towers is situated near the town centre. You can get directions and a map of how to get there from the net. This hostel is near the river that runs through Christchurch, and it is pretty walk all along this stream to town centre. The direct route to town is about twenty minutes.
This is a big hostel, with two main buildings and lots of garden rooms. Even though it is on the bigger side, it still has a small hostel feel. What makes this hostel great is the big garden at the back. The main buildings are old but well kept. The rooms in the garden are newer, and have a choice of en-suite and shared facilities. Some of the garden rooms are on the smaller side and the en-suite shower and toilets are very small. The bedding in some rooms also seemed washed out and old, but the rooms were clean and beds were comfortable. And showers have hot water. It has two big communal kitchens that are well equipped. The facilities include internet, off-street parking (although this is small), security gates to enter hostel, and laundry. They also have a help desk with info on what to do in and around Christchurch.
Even though the atmosphere at this hostel was more friendly, it wasn't too noisy. People seem to enjoy the outdoor barbeque, and sitting outside at the garden tabels to eat and just hang out.

Friendly, clean, and secure Of all the hostels we stayed at in New Zealand, Foley Towers had the friendliest atmosphere. People said "hello" as they passed you, and everyone was very considerate of the 11pm requested quiet time -- at exactly 11pm, people left the garden patio, which was right outside our room. Wow! The place is extremely secure, with a locked gate only hostelers can access with a key. The location was convenient, as we could walk to dinner, the center of town. Our twin en-suite room was basic but clean and nice. The bathroom was tiny, but we were happy that the sink faucet produced warm water (instead of most NZ sinks, which had separate cold and hot faucets, so that you had to wash with really cold or really hot water). We had to rent towels for $1. The kitchen was clean, and people seemed to meet each other and talk in them (there were two -- we only saw the one). If I went to Christchurch again, I would want to stay here and spend more time at the hostel (we only stayed one night and went out for meals and such). — Stacey , United States (2007-12-05)

This is what a hostel should be like! We stayed in a double en-suite and found this hostel to be the best one we've experienced! The room is nice, clean, and roomy. Kitchen is perfect and filled with utensils, big plus for the small jars filled with spices!! It's located just 10min away from Cathedral square, close enough to walk but also far enough from the noise. The rooms are built in a square with a nice garden in the middle, a few benches here, and there plus the BBQ area makes this a great place to hang out in -- a perfect garden in the garden city! — Amaru , Swedish (2007-04-19)

We really enjoyed the stay (although we mostly tried to get rid of our jet lags). We had a two-bed room at the back of the garden, it was nice and quiet. The kitchen was fine, in fact one of the cleanest we had, and the staff was extra-friendly. — Tim (2007-03-05)
