The Newcastle Beach YHA is a spacious old building that has been renovated and turned into a hostel with lots of character. There is a large communal room with huge leather sofas, TV, and a pool table. There is a large staircase in the main entrance hall, again with leather sofas dotted around so you can find somewhere to sit and read if you need a bit of space to yourself.
The hostel has a large well equipped kitchen and laundry on the lower floor. The unisex shower and toilet blocks are modern and clean. The double rooms are huge with high ceilings and fire places with really comfortable beds. The dorms are also fairly spacious.
Lots of information about trips is available at the hostel and the staff can also arrange for you to have a free meal at a local Irish pub three nights a week - lots of the guests take them up on the offer so it's a good way to mix. They also have a cheap all-you-can eat pizza meal at the hostel itself once a week.
The YHA is in a good location, just off Hunter Street, the main road in the town. It is just a few blocks away from the bus and train stations and a short walk to Queens Wharf where there are some lively waterfront bars. The beach is also a short walk away, where you can use the free boards available from the hostel.
