The Hostelz.com Review
Sunkist International Backpackers, housed in a modernized 1860s inn, is well located, right in Thames' historic district. It is a block from the ocean, though there is no beach at Thames.
The Location
The hostel is very close to the town's two museums and the miniature railway. All backpacker buses, and Intercity, will drop hostelers at the door. For those with cars, there is a small gravel parking lot next to the hostel.
Rooms and Bathrooms
We found our double bed very hard, but it is of decent quality. The dorm room we saw had two wooden double bunks, a dresser, and a row of hooks along the back of the beds. The bathroom is unisex and upstairs; it has four stalls and four showers. One of the showers has an associated changing room.
Common Spaces
Except for the upstairs balcony, the common areas are all on the first floor. There is a TV lounge with a large television, and a smallish computer lounge with a power strip for laptops. There are two kiosked computers. The Global Gossip internet service is reliable; we could access it from our room.
The kitchen lacks a freezer, and, more seriously, an oven. It does not even boast a toaster oven. There are two microwaves, an electric frying pan, and a range top. The dining area consists of two long tables indoors, plus a picnic table outside. There's a barbecue grill outside, and a hammock.
The owners are terrified of fire; therefore they restrict smoking severely, and those who smoke elsewhere are evicted on the spot. There is a strict no-noise rule after 11 p.m., which includes no showers after that time. Even outside that time, guests are encouraged to take short showers. The hostel charges a "day rate" for use of the common areas after check-out.
Summary
While we were there, the majority of the guests at Sunkist, especially those in private rooms, were older people. It was very quiet, and we appreciated that, but the lack of an oven and the hardness of the bed bother us, and the rule-heavy atmosphere may bother others.
