The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Hangout at Mt. Emily Hostel is a clean, high-tech hostel in the central business district of Singapore.
It is in the yuppie Mt. Sophia suburb, on the edge of the CBD. It is located on a hill and thus about fifteen-minute walk from the nearest metro underground station (Little India MRT) but it means it's quiet. The nearest bus stop is just next to the metro station. The hostel also has an airport shuttle service. The hostel is not very well known to taxi drivers, so it pays to have the exact address. Taxis are not too expensive, so it's not too bad. There is no on-site parking.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel is housed in a six-story apartment block converted into hostel rooms. There are dorm rooms on the first floor (or Level 2) -- male/ female separate dorms. The other floors have a mix of single and double or twin rooms, some with en-suite. The beds are comfortable and very firm and there are ample hooks and storage in the bed space. Bedding and towels are provided and the showers have shower gel and bath gel. There are on the average two hooks per shower area (more would be better).
All rooms are air conditioned, though not all rooms have a window. Entry to guest areas and rooms are via an electronic card key for which you have to pay a deposit that is returned to you on checkout.
Common Spaces
There is free internet access for guests via five computer terminals on Level 2, which also has free coffee/tea machine and also a drinks/snacks machine (not free). In the same common area, there is a lounge with pool table and a large plasma TV that screens movies and many TV channels. There is free Wi-Fi -- get the password from front desk. On each floor at the lift lobby there is a telephone for free local calls. There is also a laundry area with industrial sized washer/dryers -- you can buy tokens from the front desk.
There is a rooftop area for chilling out and an innovative "standing swimming pool" (shower/fountain) on Level 7. The hostel is nonsmoking indoors and has a designated smoking area outside the lounge on Level 2. There is no kitchen area at all, only a microwave and tea and coffee (free) making facilities in the lounge. The ground floor of the building has an upmarket restaurant that serves fusion food at lunchtime and in the evenings, and breakfast for hostel guests in the morning.
Summary
Mt. Emily provides clean, comfortable, and affordable accommodation in an otherwise expensive city.

I liked pretty much everything here. Its very clean, the rooms are spacious, the staff is EXTREMELY nice! the rooftop has a great view and the pool/shower hybrid there is great after a long tiring day. If I come to Singapore again, I'll go to this hostel.

Friendly/homey/clean Thank you to all staff. So friendly and so kind to us. — Linsey Weppner and 3 friends , Australia (2009-10-07)

Next time I go to Singapore, I know where I'll be staying The hostel is clean, the breakfasts are good, internet and TV are free plus the top story is quite a nice retreat. Excellent staff and Singapore efficiency. Close to Little India and a short walk to the MRT. Supermarket nearby, as are good food places in Little India. Great value and an enjoyable stay! Unfortunately it seems a lot of people agreed with me, as we couldn't stay here after coming back from Malaysia! — Kristian , Australian (2008-01-13)
