The Hostelz.com Review
Hungry Hill Lodge is located on Adrigole Harbour in sight of Hungry Hill itself. The hostel, with its grassy open grounds, is a welcome sight to Beara Way hikers after a long day on the trail, or indeed to anyone looking for a scenic accommodation for the night. It lies on the main road about halfway between Glengarriff and Castletown Bearhaven.

There are several small dorm rooms with bright white walls, sheets, and duvet covers. The bunks are wood with comfy mattresses. There are men's and women's toilets a short walk down the hall. The showers are also down the hall. There are three large shower stalls with plenty of hooks to hang clothes and even a fold-out table. Showers are push-button and so only last for minute or so, but you can push the button again immediately. The water is a nice warm temperature. It's handy to have the showers and toilets separated out, in case the hostel gets busy. There is also a drying rack by the radiator in the shower room. All the bathroom facilities are clean and in good repair. There are separate facilities for the campers that Hungry Hill Lodge also caters to.

The lounge is cozy, with several recliners circled around a fireplace. There is also a table for taking breakfast at or playing card games. One wall is almost completely made up of windows, with a view of the front yard. There are several maps of the region framed on the walls, a well-stocked bookcase, and a television and VCR. The kitchen and dining area are in the next room over, with a brightly painted wood table and chairs in the sunniest end of the room. There are six stovetop burners and an oven, as well as two sinks, a fridge/freezer, and plenty of counter space, pots, plates, and utensils. All are clean and tidy.

Hungry Hill Lodge would be a lovely place for an extended stay, its open rooms and yard a relief after the cramped conditions of many other hostels. In the summer, I imagine it would be bustling with activity, perhaps with games being played on the lawn. Even in the off season, there was good company to be found and it was a refreshing place to stay.
