The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Blue Waters Lodge YHA - Esperance Hostel caters mostly for tour groups and the odd independent traveler on his or her way to the national parks nearby -- the town of Esperance is not very interesting. At first glance the building itself looks very old and rundown. Floors are creaky and rooms are cold. The best thing about this hostel is the couple running it. They do absolutely everything to make the place the best it can be.
The Location
Blue Waters Lodge is outside the town center (a fifteen-minute walk). Probably the easiest way to reach it is by car, but there is a bus stop two kilometers away and a free pick-up can be arranged.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are over a hundred beds -- a few singles, doubles, and twins, with the remainder dormitories. Due to its distant location from the rest of the Southwest Coast towns, the hostel seems half-empty and quiet all the time. All the rooms have new carpets and a new coat of paint on the walls, but they still seem old and cold. Free linen and bedding are provided, but no lockers. Toilets are few but always clean and never busy because there's not that many people.
Common Spaces
The common areas are all huge -- kitchen (free tea and coffee), dining area, lounge, and a BBQ area outside. There are also two computers available for use and two parking areas. Kitchen and dining area are absolutely spotless!
Summary
The building looks like a big shack, but is kept extremely clean and organised all the time. It's not busy or exciting, but a good place to stay for a night or two. The town of Esperance isn't anything special, but the national parks and archipelago well worth visiting -- and if you're on a budget this the place to stay overnight!

Best location, friendliest staff. Had the time of my life!!! Stu went out of his way to make sure everyone was having a great time. I can highly reccommend it to anyone!!! — Ant....!! (2005-07-24)

Great place to stay. Nice and clean, and there's plenty of things to do in Esperance. Keep up the good work, Stu!! — Kerri (2005-06-26)
I stayed in this hostel for a week and I didn't enjoy it at all (and I couldn't leave because there's no refund policy). If cleanliness is more important than the kindness and the atmosphere, well, it's not my type of place. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. — Vanessa (2005-02-26)
