The Hawkesbury Heights YHA Hostel is a comfortable and quiet little hostel on the eastern edge of the Blue Mountains. Although it is technically in a suburban area, its tucked-away location on a gravel road makes it feel less so. Rooms are decent, but they can get a little warm in the summer with only fans to cool them. The kitchen is well-kept and well-stocked with utensils and spices. The bathroom and showers are spacious and clean, too.
The hostel itself is an interesting structure. From within, the most striking feature is the structural use of gnarled Australian timbers, which are visible within the vaulted ceiling over the common room. The look of the hostel, combined with the friendliness of the hosts and the other guests, makes it feel much more like a homestay than other hostels in Australia.
Even though it is not in the heart of the Blue Mountains, this hostel is nonetheless close to many of its attractions such as the wonderful hiking trails in Wentworth. The National Pass Trail (pictured) and the Valley of the Waters are not to be missed! Closer still is the trailhead to the aboriginal paintings at Red Hands Cave. The eastern end of the scenic Bells Line of Road is also nearby.
This hostel is a fine value, especially if what you want is a little peace and quiet without having to totally leave civilization behind.
