The Hostelz.com Review
Te Anua is a great base for trips to the Milford Sound. There isn't much to do in the town but the lake is gorgeous and the walk around it even prettier. The hostel is located right on the lake very close to the center of town. It has three different types of accomadation. 1) The camper (literally a camper you would attatch to a car and go on a road trip), those are located in a small field with shared outside facilities. 2) The typical dorm room with anywhere from 4-10 residents 3) Single rooms. The rooms are typical dorm rooms, a little dingy, not much for decorations, bunk beds, mattress, pillow, no sheets- bring a sleeping bag or be prepared to pay for them.

The kitchen area is wide open, very spacious, and a gathering point for many of the visitors. There is a small tv lounge area and a large number of computers (as far as hostels go) avaliable for internet use for a low cost(and by that I mean paying a small fortune) of $8 an hour. At the time of visiting the computer on the far right side was broken and could be used for hours at a time for no cost.

A word to the wise, pay the $3 extra and stay in the small guest house near the back of the property. The rooms are extra cozy and the kitchen is shared with a max if 16 guests (there are also two of them). The bathrooms are clean and newly renovated. Also individual, good for privacy, bad if you really need it and someone is in there. The tv area is small and homey with nice plush yellow couches.

Definitely don't come as far as Te Anau and not go to Milford Sound, the ladies at the front desk will be more than helpful in booking the tour.

Very cozy, good for meeting people
This hostel was in a beautiful location, right next to the lake. I used it as a base to travel to Milford Sound from. It had a nice fireplace and cozy lounge. I liked it, and met some really nice people!

Had read quite a few negative reviews about this place and didn't quite know what to expect. We booked a double room with en-suite and ended up in our own little cottage with free towels and a TV. We were very happy with our cottage, very nice and clean and for the price we paid it was a steal. The only negative about this hostel is that the kitchen next to us (there is a bigger kitchen in the main house) was very basic, just one stove, and not that many utensils. Considering the price we paid and what we got for it I would stay here again if I'm in the area in the future.

I've stayed here over the years starting in 1996 and will no longer stay there. It hasn't changed in years, literally, same kitchen, same furniture, same everything. It's starting to look tired. When they charged $11 for a bed, it was ok, but not for the price they charge now. If you end up here, it won't be the end of the world, but there are other options in town that are a better value.

The one and only good thing I can say about this place is about where it is situated: not too far to walk to the shops. Other than that, it's very expensive.
