Te Anua is a great base for trips to the Milford Sound. There isn't much to do in the town but the lake is gorgeous and the walk around it even prettier. The hostel is located right on the lake very close to the center of town. It has three different types of accomadation. 1) The camper (literally a camper you would attatch to a car and go on a road trip), those are located in a small field with shared outside facilities. 2) The typical dorm room with anywhere from 4-10 residents 3) Single rooms. The rooms are typical dorm rooms, a little dingy, not much for decorations, bunk beds, mattress, pillow, no sheets- bring a sleeping bag or be prepared to pay for them.
The kitchen area is wide open, very spacious, and a gathering point for many of the visitors. There is a small tv lounge area and a large number of computers (as far as hostels go) avaliable for internet use for a low cost(and by that I mean paying a small fortune) of $8 an hour. At the time of visiting the computer on the far right side was broken and could be used for hours at a time for no cost.
A word to the wise, pay the $3 extra and stay in the small guest house near the back of the property. The rooms are extra cozy and the kitchen is shared with a max if 16 guests (there are also two of them). The bathrooms are clean and newly renovated. Also individual, good for privacy, bad if you really need it and someone is in there. The tv area is small and homey with nice plush yellow couches.
Definitely don't come as far as Te Anau and not go to Milford Sound, the ladies at the front desk will be more than helpful in booking the tour.
