If you are going to stay in Mackay, Larrikin Lodge is the place to come! Clean, comfortable, and cozy, you'll like this hostel. If you are arriving by bus, call ahead to see about a pickup, otherwise it is within walking distance from the station (you'll want a map). The hostel has only thirty beds split among a couple rooms, so it has a personal and very friendly feel to it. The building is actually one of the old Queenslander homes, situated in a neighborhood close to the main streets and also the greyhound dog raceway (go if you have a chance).
Rooms have either bunks or non-bunk beds and are very comfortable. The bathroom is down the hall and is clean but not very big. The kitchen and dining room can be found at the back end of the house, and are cozy, with free tea and coffee. The garden is nice, with a pool available for guests too. You'll find a nice communal lounge area on the back porch as well, and there are bikes for rent. Mackay is a lot less tourist-y and more spread out, so if you want to go to the beach or get around town quickly, we recommend taking a nice bike ride. The staff are very helpful with directions and ideas. Of course one of the biggest draws to Mackay is the platypus tours, which are fun, and Larrakin Lodge works directly with Jungle Johno Eco Tours. Enjoy exploring the town and especially the nearby national parks with the convenience and comfort of this nice hostel.
