Welcome to Ireland!!!!! Not a backpackers hostel, this is a long term doss house for the irish workers. Clean and comfy, good kitchen and showers fine. Free breakfast tea and coffee. Not bad for a few nights have stayed in far worse places, just dont forget your ear plugs. Trust me. — Anonymous , Uk (2012-02-09) Ok hostel We stay here and also the very cool hostel around the corner. this hostel has great facilities and a pool, but not Byo drinks. — Dalhan , Sweden (2010-06-06) Trashbag City I was here for three nights, two of the nights I was woken up by the girl below me having sex with men she brought back from the bar. When I complained to the hostel, they were nonplussed, and said it was normal. I have stayed around the world, at more than thirty hostels, and I have never even heard of this happening, let alone being tolerated. I suppose if you're the one having sex, the place will be great, but if you don't want to stay in a brothel, find one of the many better hostels in Northbridge. — Thomas , Canada (2008-02-23) Good atmosphere This is a party hostel near all the pubs/clubs of Northbridge and there is something on every night. Good atmosphere in the hostel, easy to meet people, mostly Irish occupancy when I was there. Pool/bar area is the main social area, because there's a bar you aren't allowed to BYO alcohol which is a big disadvantage, but most sneaked it into the rooms anyway. I found staff helpful, but the place wasn't particularly well staffed for the size and I can see how they got annoyed and took it out on people. The facilities look newish but the place isn't very well maintained with the dorm I was in having chewing gum stuck to things, graffiti on the bunk, springs gone in the mattresses (I got back ache), only 1 out of 4 lockable cupboards had its door intact, tv+dvd faulty, air con was down (didn't need it though). Despite this it is the place to go for atmosphere and partying, just don't expect great sleep every night. — Mark , Scotland (2008-01-15) Amazing People, nasty Staff I lived in this place for almost three months, in a ten-bed dorm no less. The place is great, well kept, well equipped, and loads of wicked people stay there. My only issue is with the attitude of some of the staff, on occasion they would go power mad, chuck people out, tell you off like a child and generally treat you like sh*t that ain't worth anything to them! I was lucky and managed to avoid their bad sides, but if they don't like you, you're f***ed, if they do then you can get away with Murder! — Happy Camper , British (2007-06-11) ok i stayed in the underground for three whole months, which was brilliant -- had a really good time. then one sunday morning i was rudely awakened by a certain lady behind reception and told to leave. i had no money and nowhere to go had to stay in the biggest sh*thole in perth for two nights. I found the staff at the underground to be so patronising and think they have power over everyone and think they can speak down to you. if you don't like your job don't do it, Warren, and don't do night shifts and take it out on us. And as for Miss Kylie the manager, who does that woman think she is? how dare she speak to people the way she does, she gives australia a bad name. so all in all i loved the underground hostel, really met the best friends there but some of the staff i think should be upgraded. it would do the underground the world of good. the nicest old man bob (daddy) works there or maybe they got rid of him but they should bring in more like him. — Jenny Quail , Irish (2007-05-18) Not the worst backpackers ever, but a few unprofessional staff members served as the last straw in a long list of nuisance issues (Phillip, Shannon, and Jenny were great, but watch out for the big guy Warren and the bald guy. They can be moody.). Showers absolutely sucked! Hot wouldn't stay hot, and sometimes even cold wouldn't stay cold! No chance of a quiet night either, as there was always someone screaming in the middle of the night from the pool area. And the staff LOVE their intercom, as they will consistently make several hostel-wide announcements while you are trying to sleep each morning. On the bright side, I only saw one or two roaches while I was there. — The Texan (2006-12-18) Good facilities, professional staff very helpful as well. Economical. Security is pretty good. Each guy is given his own room key and a locker (large) for keeping in stuff. Hostel does have its share of budget hotel cons as well -- little things like some dodgy blokes (who had a pint or two more) singing their heart out in the middle of the night. but the facilities and the staff attitude more than made up for that. Location quite near to Perth station. convenient transportation to Freemantle.
Highly recommended. — Mukesh Shetty (2006-08-17) UB has lost its way a bit in the past 12 months, the trophy seems to have gone to the mega hip new place in aberdeen st, we went back here after finishing our sydney part of the trip and the service and standards were not as good as before. This place could be great, but its all the stupid things management does that annoys everybody, like using loudspeakers at 9am every morning to announce who owes rent, having an occasional dodgy local show up in your room, bad security, and worse of all being kicked out of the pool area (that has no seats or music) at 9pm on a hot summers night just as your getting cozy with a sweet swedish girl! — Travelling Spectre (2006-06-13) Never ever again! We got bedbugs here and the reaction from the staff: they paid us the washing what was really nice, but for our bagpacks they gave us Ajax to make them dizzy. After looking under the sheed in the next room we found an other small bug.
Just for bug fans! — Nina (2006-02-01) This is definitely a very well equipped hostel complete with pool and excellent facilities. It has all the mod cons of a budget hotel really, and the dorms at the back of the building are really new and modern. Really recommend it, plus the staff were professional. One thing - not sure if it was just the time I was staying (over NYE 2005) but there were some VERY dodgy blokes staying here and they also allow guests in too. Could be safer. Location not hugely scenic but close to most stuff. — Anon (2006-01-21) Top class. Excellent kitchen and communal areas. Great bar with lots happening, plus great pool (water) and pool (Balls). Fantastic cinema/TV room with nightly films on request. Also, well within walking distance of city centre. — samson (2005-01-20) This was the first place I went in Oz (Australia). I just asked the bus driver from the airport to drop us somewhere nice. And was it ever! It's clean, friendly, air-conditioned, and has a pool and a great atmosphere.
