The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Lennox Head Beachhouse YHA Hostel is a little gem in a little gem of a town. Lennox Head is only a couple of kilometers from Byron Bay with a fantastic beach and laid back vibe.
The Location
The YHA Is on Ross Street, which is on the Northern end of Lennox Head about ten minutes' walk from the Premier Bus Stop with a backpack, but Graeme will come and pick you up if you phone. The hostel is only about one hundred meters from both the beach and Ainsworth Lake. Lennox Head is a quite little town and the YHA is on the edge of it.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are a choice of double rooms or four- or six-dorm single sex dorms. As you'd expect from a YHA, it's all lovely and clean, with lockers in the rooms as well as space to hang stuff in the single sex bathrooms. The bathrooms are across the yard and also single sex. The showers are lovely and large with pegs to hang your things and space on a dry bit of floor for your belongings. There are a large number of basins and mirrors, which makes life a bit easier.
Common Spaces
The common room has a number of couches with a TV and VCR and there is also a PC with internet access in the corner. As internet access in Lennox Head is a bit scarce, this is a welcome addition, even if you have to pay for it. This hostel would fit into the subdued but social type of hostel -- the people are laid back and friendly rather than preoccupied with getting hammered night after night. It's certainly not a dry hostel, though, and a good time is had by all. The common outdoor area is partially covered so this is a natural place to hang, smoke, or eat your dinner. There is also a BBQ.
Summary
This hostel is run by a family, but it often seems like its a one-man outfit with Graeme working what must be eighteen-hour days. He's been doing this a long time and knows his stuff and he'll even teach you how to windsurf on the lake in the warmer months for free. This hostel is a lovely little place, which ought to be a lot more busy than it is, but thankfully remains that hidden gem.

best kept secret on the coast! peaceful and quiet right next to the beach. Graeme and anna are great. If you go, try the chocolate cake! — STELLA25 (2006-10-27)

This is my favourite place in the world. Who needs Fiji or Bali when it's all there in Lennox Head? Graeme, the owner, knows everyone by name and makes your stay extra special. If you're lucky enough to be there at Christmas, as I was, Graeme and Anna put on croissants and champagne by the beach! What a way to celebrate away from home, watching the dolphins surf the waves.
It's a little off the beaten track, but make the effort - you won't be dissapointed. — Carolyn, New Zealand (2006-01-05)

The BEST! Not only did Graeme throw us a WELCOME BBQ he made veggie burgers for the vegetarians and then gave us all massages the next day.
Plus access to surfboards and boogie boards and fresh herb garden. — Lindsey (2006-01-05)

This was my favorite place in Australia. Graeme (the owner) is really cool, and the hostel is clean, tidy and really nice. The town is excellent for just chilling and it has amazing surf on the point and on the beach (sometimes!). Go stay!! — Joe S. (UK) (2004-06-01)

Great location, clean and homey. The staff are very nice. I will come back and stay in the future. Cheers. — Shari (2004-04-16)
